Which industry do you prefer?
Hello fellow Operating Engineers! I wanted to get an idea of the most popular industries who hire us Power Engineers/Stationary Operating Engineers/Building Operators.. Please select an option, and give us a brief explanation why! If you chose other, let us know where you work or where you'd prefer to work! This will give some insight to current students or folks who are thinking about joining.

I work in waste-to-energy power generation. I prefer this because I love the work that goes into reducing our carbon footprint, and the efficiency of the plant is outstanding.

@Chris Buske yes great answer! It completely slipped my mind that most remote oil and gas sites produce their own power and heat using cogeneration.
The Shift Work Struggle: Power Engineers and Working Holiday Shifts!
Power Engineers! As many of us know all too well, the nature of our work often requires us to work shifts that can fall on weekends, nights, and, yes, even holidays. While we take pride in keeping our facility running 24/7/365, working on holidays can be challenging, missing out on time with family and friends during special occasions. It got me thinking about which Canadian holiday is the least favourite among us to work. Each holiday comes with its own vibe and the kind of festivities we might miss out on. Feel free to share your experiences, any particular reasons why you chose the holiday you did, or how you make the best of working on these special days. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and stories!

I am okay to work any Holiday! I try not to put too much sentimental value on the holidays. I personally don't agree with most of them, but to each their own. If companies are willing to pay extra wage, then sign me up! If you find yourself struggling with the thought of having to work on one of these holidays, remind yourself it's just like any other day, don't hold it to such a high standard/value, don't subject it to too much meaning. IT'S JUST ANOTHER DAY WITH MORE PAY :)
Anyone write 3B2/3B1 recently
Hi, did anyone write 3b2/3b1 recently? Do you remember what they focused heavily on? Some tips would be great.

I am writing soon. All I can say is, study the material and learn it. You can't fail the exam if you know the material.

@Mike Nguyen I do agree it is quite the amount of information needed to confidently pass the exams. Best thing for sure is to go into them with no stress. The smartest person will fail if they suffer from test anxiety ๐Ÿ˜…. Good luck to you sir. You can always rewrite.
4th Class Power Engineering
Hello, Im new here. I just want to reach out if theres anyone there knows any opening position for a 4th Class. I recently passed my 4A& 4B. I just challenged it because ABSA recognized my credentials I obtained as Mechanical Engineer from the Philippines. I am also a Red Seal JM Pipefitter/Steamfitter with 9 years of Oil & Gas Experience. Thank you so much.

CALL every plant! They really notice you more when you do this. Thank me later.
Working nights/days
Just a question for everyone while Iโ€™m waiting to be bussed to site. What do you prefer working as a shift worker night shift or day shift? Whatโ€™s your truck for flipping quickly into night shift mode and getting a good quality sleep? Myself Iโ€™m partial to nights, I can get more studying done at the panel, but also donโ€™t mind day shift!

Cracking the night's code is next to impossible. We are inherently designed this way through evolution on our planet. Your body's circadian rhythm doesn't allow for this, you can only try to decrease side effects. When you don't sleep the usual schedule you are at a much higher risk of heart attacks, so if you drink and smoke as a shift worker, paired with bad eating habits... yikes... If on nights, take it slow and rest as much as you can. Stay physically active during the day, and make sure you get at least 30 minutes of direct sunlight to ensure proper production in Vitamin D (remember it's the UV light you need for vitamin D production, it's your responsibility to ingest the vitamins to be available for breakdown and production). Hope this helps.
