12 contributions to Learn Microsoft Fabric
5k members, 1200 threads and now a 2nd team member
Hi everyone, things have gone fast since I launched this community back in January 2024!! I still remember my proud post when we reached 50 members (see below). Well, recently we crossed a previously unimaginable milestone of 5k members. Thank you to every one of you that chooses to spend your time here learning Fabric and engaging with the community. So far, we have had over 1200 conversations/ threads about Microsoft Fabric (the search bar contains a wealth of information!). I hope it has helped you learn Microsoft Fabric. The best thing is that this is just the start, I will continue to invest in this community because I can see it's making (at least a small) difference. But a community of this size is difficult to manage alone (especially as now I spend a lot of time in Fabric Dojo too). As such, I'm delighted to announce that I've brought on board Maleek - @Mubaraq Abdulmaleek to support yourselves (and me!) around the community. Maleek is hugely passionate about Fabric (he was one of the first members of this community back in January!), DP-600 certified and eager to learn as much as possible. He'll help new members get onboarded, help members find stuff (course content/ previous answers to community questions), and generally help make sure you have a great experience here. Great to have you here, Maleek! Soon, I'll share what I have planned for this community in 2025 and beyond. Thank you so much for being a part of this community we're building!

Array Variable passed to Notebook activity help
Hi Everyone, It seems that there is no straight forwqard way of passing an array variable from a ForEach activity to use as input to a Notebook activity. I would love to hear how this is being handled in the community. Any docs or examples would be fantastic Thank you

@Will Needham I ve seen examples using a JsonString function but I don’t see that available in Fabric expression builder. Do you have a specific function you use ? Thanks in advance

@Andy Vold thanks. I’m actually using an accumulate_variable (which is a mandatory array) at the end of a ForEach activity in a Fabric Data pipeline. I want to pass this variable to a Notebook activity where the notebook can use the multi element values to process into multiple data frames using a “ for table in tables list”. My issue is the Notebook activity won’t accept the array variable so I need to transform it to a string variable, which the nb will accept. Then I can transform it back into an array in the notebook inside the activity to be used. I think your solution is using an actual notebook which I can’t get too. But I do appreciate your input if I’m understanding correctly. Thank you
Notebooks
Newbie question- I’m assigning values to variables in a notebook and I want to submit those variables as parameters to another notebook. What is the recommended way of doing this? Thanks

@Sreedhar Vengala Thank you very much!
Whenever you are asked to select a Region, stop and think!
There are many places where you can be asked to select a Region in Fabric, or in Azure more generally. So I recommend, always stopping and thinking about the region you select (do research on the topic, before you choose), because the selection you make can sometimes have quite a big impact on functionality/ user experience. Here's some very common places where you need to specify a region, and where making the wrong decision, can cause issues: - When you set up your Fabric free trial - make sure you select a Region that is supported. You can find which region you are currently in (in Microsoft's world) - using this link. - And you can find a list of supported Fabric regions in this link. If you set up your Azure instance outside one of these regions, it's likely you will NOT have access to all the Fabric experiences - When you set up Azure DevOps organisation - this is a classic one. Unfortunately, currently you cannot connect an ADO repository to a Workspace attached to a Capacity in a different Azure region. It's also not possible to sync your Fabric workspace to an ADO repository on another tenant. - Setting up a new capacity. And then switching the Capacity of a workspace from Capacity A (in Region A) to Capacity B (in Region B) can cause issues too with Region Locking. This basically restricts you from making such a change, and might cause you to have to manually migrate your assets between two regions. What are your experiences, have you ever selected the wrong region and lived to regret it?

@Sunil Patel yes egress cost and having our region geographically closer was a factor for us to move as well
Changing ownership of Fabric objects
Our team has been developing pipelines, notebooks and warehouses for our current project and all ownership of these are by individual developers. What is best practice in changing ownership of these objects? To a service account? Or other? Also what is the recommended method of making the changes? There doesn’t seem to be a straight forward way of easily doing this in our workspace. Thanks for any recommendations
