Hey Pod School'ers, happy Sunday. So, @Alex Chisnall and I need a favour... If you have been getting ANY value at all from Pod School, then please do us a massive favour and share this community with another person who has aspirations of becoming a podcast legend! That's right, we don't want you to spam your whole phonebook, we are asking you to suggest this group to JUST ONE PERSON. We love the community that is already building here on Skool and we want to ensure that we add more members who can contribute, engage, add value, support each other etc. which is why we don't want you to blanket-bomb a text to everyone you know, but just tell one person about this group that you believe will get (and give) value oto the wonderful gang that we have collectively been growing over here. Just ping this link https://www.skool.com/podschool to that one awesome person that you think deserves to know about our squad! โ›ต๏ธ All Boats Rise In A High Tide โ›ต๏ธ Thanks a lot, we greatly appreciate it.

I have shared it for you
What's in a name?
I have a question on podcast names fellow Pod Schoolers. There is already a podcast with the name i want to use but it is American. Same name but i will be covering very different topics and themes so should attract a different audience. Are there any rules on names and should i be worried about having the same name?

As @James Burtt says check for any trademarks etc. If you type the name into Google what do you get? Which platforms is it on? If it has limited reach it might not be an issue. If you get few results from searching, you may be okay, however..... Someone I know launched their podcast with an identical name to another. Whilst it has zero issues if you find the podcast via his social media posts, if you search on a podcast app it is. The site is pushed way down. If this is a brand of yours try and be unique. My Podcast was called Property on Fire - I just did a Google search and it came up top. That is what should happen to yours.

@Bob Allen good point about the domain name. This was important in my choice. As someone who suffers from ME/CFS and has peripheral neuropathy, I know all about pain ๐Ÿ˜‚ If they don't have a domain etc., it could be fine. Did they only broadcast on Spotify? or did they use other platforms. If not the reach might be limited. If you put "pain free living" podcast into Google what do you get? Keep the name in quotes but include the word podcast That might indicate the reach
Picking a name!!
I appreciate that there is a video on this, but these are my own thoughts, when I went through the process. For me branding is everything. I run a national planning consultancy - Planning Geek, plus a few smaller brands with similar names. It had to be a name that people would remember. If they saw the name on social media, would they link me to it, would they remember the podcast or would it mean nothing. I began with several names - should it be planning related or should it be more general? What if I wanted to diverge from property, would it still work? Give it some thought as to the target market. Do you want to target certain individuals with a passion for outdoor table tennis or do you want to go wider into sport (as a random example) Go and ask family and friends personally for any ideas. You are starting the publicity engine! Before you go much further look up each name on more than one podcast app. Are they there? If so, are they still broadcasting? Check for trademarks where you live or intend to market the podcast. I had to rule out one name as whilst it existed and they had moved on to another podcast name leaving this abandoned for years, the name was trademarked for podcasts! If you want to attract listeners in other countries, does the name translate well. Would they understand it? Publicity is great before a launch, so go and ask the world. Maybe run a poll on the options. Maybe half a dozen. Include names that you have rejected. The content the poll is almost irrelevant - it is there to tell the world of your plans! Remember you don't need to agree with the top option or use it. Asking others is just publicity. Don't forget to check to see if you can get the domain name and maybe social media handles. Let's face it, the podcast can also attract listeners outside of any podcast app or dedicated platform website. When you have picked the name, post it saying you are going to launch a new podcast called whatever. Ask people for their views on the name (probably not too close to the poll). Hopefully you will get some opposition!
