Podcast Formats That Build Authority, Boost Engagement, & Drive Business Growth
I have a newbie question. You talk about downloading podcasts. And subscribing. When I listen to them it’s usually on Spotify and I don’t typically download and just listen while streaming. In that case does the podcast analytics get points for being listened to or is it only when it’s downloaded that it counts? Just trying to understand the way it’s measured.
POST YOUR EPISODES
Hi Pod Schoolers, I know @Alex Chisnall mentioned this in a previous but I wanted to make sure that you all knew that there is a channel in this group just for the purposes of promo'ing your latest podcast episodes... that's right, feel free to unashamedly punt your latest episode link in our 'NEW PODCAST' CHANNEL so that the rest of the Pod School family know you have a new show out and can go take a watch 📺 / listen 🎧

That will be great to learn and also get some feedback in a safe space from other pod schoolers and the pros 👍
Dream Listener workbook
Hi @Alex Chisnall - thanks for the lesson on the dream listener. Can you point me to the workbook you showed to see where I have some gaps. I have already done a lot of the work you describe but was watching on my phone and couldn’t see the screen properly and what was in the doc. My persona is called Alex and I have them/they down to a lot of detail already through a parallel process I am doing on my social and content strategy. That work will clearly feed directly into Podcasts - topics, tone, brand, style etc.

@Alex Chisnall I know! I created them/they about a month ago. What are the chances of stopping my scroll the other day to listen to a rant from @James Burtt on LinkedIn about someone not paying him - I thought - that’s refreshing let me follow this guy and then I saw the podcast work the following week which was on my radar as a next step. Accelerate forward and here I am already competed week one!
Introductions and Hello 👋
Hello, I am Gwendy, a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach and bootstrapped Founder of Owning Your Space. Over 35 years, I’ve worked in marketing, communications, training, and coaching across industries while living in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. South African born, now based in the Lake District in the UK, I’m building something deeply personal: Owning Your Space. It’s a space—currently in development—designed to help people navigate some of life’s big transitions, like redundancy, retirement, bold career pivots, or stepping into that first job after being a student. I’m not a career coach, but I work with professionals at pivotal crossroads in their careers. This isn’t just about launching an app; it’s about starting a movement. Owning Your Space will offer private, grounded support—away from the noise and scrutiny of social media—to help people claim their strengths and reinvent, rebuild, or reignite their path forward. Whether someone seeks community, a course, or coaching, it’s about starting with what they’re already naturally good at and building from there, one step at a time. Right now, I’m in full build mode—developing the story, establishing the right channels to connect with my audience, and preparing for Owning Your Space to launch in 2025. Podcasts are an exciting part of this journey. I’m here at Pod School to learn everything about podcasting—from starting and growing a show to eventually monetizing it. I also see podcasts as a way to create meaningful content for my courses and connect with others by sharing my story as a guest on their shows. I’m looking forward to learning and collaborating with this group!

Introductions and Hello 👋
@Olly Hall-Green thank you so much for your kind words and reading my intro. Onwards and upwards!
@Alex Chisnall Thank you. Always learning and also stepping into new territory fearlessly!
Cheat Sheets Idea for lessons
Hi @Alex Chisnall @James Burtt - as I work my way through the content in the classroom, one thing that may be helpful is a small cheat sheet to summarize the actions from each lesson. For example … five things you need to action based on this lesson (do this, think about that, remember etc…) …. I found myself going back and forth and making some notes on my phone listening in Skool and then drafting notes which meant I left the lesson and had to come back into it. It would be helpful to have an easy copy paste of the key nuggets or to do’s by lesson below the description. Not a biggie but an idea for streamlining the experience as you build this out further.

@James Burtt thanks 🤩 . And also thanks to you and @Alex Chisnall for all the week one content. I have listened to all of them like a good pod schooler. Do I get a gold star for the effort or a report card? 🥂 The good news is I have a good head start in development areas of persona development and brand linked to my app launch 🚀 and I can use that to build out the nuances for the podcast channel. Super. This has been extremely helpful and now even more convinced than ever this is a key channel for me to create influence in my space. Incidently, I was on a webinar this afternoon listening to Daniel Priestley and his book arrived in the post. Very exciting.
@Olly Hall-Green Yep. Doing something similar. Pausing and note taking on my phone. Although I will say @James Burtt - in one of your videos listening last night during my note taking, I spotted an outtake you didn’t take out but it made me laugh. I am sure you said “I don’t want you to walk before you can run” - the comment was in regards to frequency. Perhaps running before walking is not a bad strategy to get the procrastinator moving ☺️
