So, is Skool a cult?!
It’s just that I was discussing the Skool concept to a friend yesterday, full of enthusiasm for that I have finally found a social platform that resonates with me. Doesn’t have the self-importance of LinkedIn or the background noise and waffle that you get on Facebook. I enjoy YouTube, but that is more of a replacement for television. So all I said was I just need 3,500 interactions from my peers to be risen to the rank of Level 7 Zardnut Wizard, and be invited to a congregation of likeminded wizards (what’s the collective noun for wizards?) at Skool HQ. His response was… dude, I think you might be in a cult. But seriously… if Skool is a cult, what the hell have I been playing at for 24 years of my adult life?! Enjoying the ride…

@Eric Bai IKR! We have a homemade sign (in the style of the ‘believe’ poster from Ted Lasso) about our studio door ‘Don’t forget, you live here now’. It feels a little like that 🤪 Coincidentally, the sign on the other side says ‘so long and thanks for all the fish’ - Huge Douglas Adams fan…

@Aurélie Cécile Rosette 😂 and I’m still here!
Skool speed is so FAST today!
I am noticed today browsing on Skool is so fast and I like it! Feels super smooth even though my laptop is slower as memory is almost full. Maybe it us because there are no more "5 Leadership Lessons I Learned from a Sunburn in Bali" posts to wade through 🤭😂

@Jade Jemma yeah this is the reason I stopped running a free community… Time wasters jumping in, ignoring house rules and then start promoting their services. Was fed up policing it so I switched to paid. Just a $1 per month threshold seems to stop most of this. My coaching community is tiny but going so well, because there is a real financial commitment, so members are there for help and support. Hopefully the heavy-handed approach will only be needed for a short while to do the job, and we can all get back to building a very cool community 😎

@Jade Jemma thank you! 😊 I’ll write a pseudo introspective, humble brag, covering what I claimed to learn - when I return from Bali 🙌
Rules for this community
I'm not happy with the recent trends in this community. This is a place for genuine conversations and connections with other community owners. This is not a place for you to build your "thought leader" reputation with "4 things I learned in Bali about leadership" type posts and hollow comments. Here's the rules: 1. Don't be annoying 2. No self promotion 3. Don't use chatGPT 4. This isn't LinkedIn: Don't be a "thought leader" (see meme) 5. No engagement farming: Empty content to boost posts and get likes 6. Be positive 7. Make an effort If you see any posts/comments that break these rules - report them. If you're not sure, report them anyway. We're tightening up moderation.

@Lara Holland yeah I was in the same boat, but decided to ignore a lot of that and look for the genuine, helpful posts. But I can say that there are some phenomenal brains on here, and I have hired one or two of them to help me with my content. Top people too! Skool might not be for everyone, but I have found it pretty impactful for me.

@Lara Holland that is an issue for sure, but it has been heartwarming to see some of the best coaches on here starting to call the grifters out. Hopefully posts like this from Sam Ovens will help. I’ve been around long enough to be comfortable in my old grouchy ways, but I have found the good outweighs the irritating. Here’s the thought that goes through my head from time to time: You are barely out of preschool, have zero life experience, yet you are telling me that you have the secret sauce to making me millions per month in passive income? Give over 😂
My rocky road to recording better quality YouTube videos (and Zoom calls)
When I signed up as a Udemy Instructor five years ago, I needed to start recording tutorials for my content. They were awful! So bit by bit, I have slowly improved my video setup. I am certainly not a professional, and this setup is not perfect. But it is low-cost (I suppose this is relative), and by connecting my iPhone directly to Descript and my Macbook using Continuity Camera, I can start recording within 20 seconds of entering my cabin. This is my priority. I want to record more training content with 'good' video and audio quality instead of fewer videos with 'superb' quality. Members of a couple of Skool communities have asked me what setup I use, so I thought it was a good time to create a video covering this, even if it is a little outside of my niche/skillset. I hope this video can help you if you are going through a similar journey. Likewise, if you are a YouTube or video pro, it would be great to hear your tips on how I can develop it further without spending a small fortune on gear. Just out of interest, what approach do you take with video calls? I have added a poll below! Cheers, Elwyn

@Sarah Hankins Same. That first 10 minutes… I’m pretty much dead inside but it gets me every time. Damn you Pixar!

@Chanin Zellner around 3-4,000 (professionally) over the last 20 years, but lost count! I created them myself initially, then started training designers and project managing in my agency. I wanted to change things up to start coaching after Covid, with one of my designers taking over the agency side of things. That’s why I’m on Skool - I think it will be the next big thing!

@Chanin Zellner yes! It can be someone’s 1st or 101st website - the nature of successful websites is that they should never truly be ‘finished’ - a bit like a Skool community. I can help people to build professional websites with website builders (I am a Squarespace authorised trainer, but starting with Wix this autumn), then manage it going forward with SEO, building product landing pages etc… I also help people transition into web design as a business/service, covering design principles, best practice, handling clients, AI and productivity hacks, selling web design as a service… it’s fun!
