Eat and tongue connection?
Hey brilliant vocal hive mind! I come seeking possible answers; I have been getting the sensation of my ears being blocked or plugged, like you get with altitude changes when I sing. I can't "pop" my ears when thos happen and if you know what I mean. It really messes with my hearing when it happens, it's usually when I am singing in choir. I've asked other singers and voice teachers, and everyone is baffled. It's been happening on and off for a year now, not allergies or ear infections. I'm not having this happen randomly when speaking. Dan mentioned a connection between the tongue and one of the ear bones in the recent "make your tongue your friend" video. (Honestly bursting to make dirty jokes here!) I DO struggle with tongue tension, I swear it's too big for my mouth. Could I be doing something with my tongue that is causing the ear thing? Anyone else ever have this? How do you release it? Thank you for your thoughts and wisdom!

Hey anyone who found my original question that should have read "ear" not "eat".... le sigh, hate typing on phones 🙂 Anywho, i think I found the answer, and i know why it happens, for me, specifically in choir (hard eye roll). Here is the you tube video that connects the dots for me for anyone self-pedagoguing at home.

"When I make enough money"
Realized this week that I've been using this phrase as an excuse -- A couple of dreams I have that involve having a lot of money are -- Creating a scholarship fund at the Conservatory so that the pedagogy program is fully funded (and retro-paying all previous students' loans and tuition). And producing new and exciting new musical theatre work -- others' and my own. And I thought -- what could I do that did a similar thing as the scholarship? I could give my knowledge away to the best of my ability -- what if I put everything I teach and have learned on YouTube for anyone to access?? That feels satisfying and possible. And the shows -- dang, I work at the freaking Boston Conservatory. I wonder where I might find some musicians and singing actors to workshop some things. I don't need the idyllic barn on my farm (yet). I want to see what I can do from the wealth I already have. What can you do today from the wealth you already have? Love much

I create most of what i think are barriers; i find that this is a very true statement. Money is a barrier, its true. There are faster ways and smoother roads, but not necessarily actually better. Sometimes the point is learning what there is to know along the way, doing the thing other people only speculate about so other people can see a possibility. It kinda sucks when your workshopped experimental piece ends up on Broadway and you didn't go with it, maybe? Having found myself a million times in some kind of quasi-experimental group (there is not a brain bleach aciduous enough to clear the phrase "building the plane as we fly it" on my internal auto loop.... le sigh), I now feel like my reasons were never the glits and glitter. My why was always just to be part of the story, and in retrospect to see that the path may have been a little easier because of my bullheadedness. I'm not going to stop buying the my mega millions tickets once a week, but dang it when I hit (or you hit, it doesn't really matter), I'm going to have the structures and world i want to actively under construction. I really do like this plane we seem to be building.

Before it's too late 🎵
Thinking of that song "Purpose" from Avenue Q -- This week I sent an email about hooking into your purpose and how being a musical theatre singer harmonizes with that. A big part of my purpose is to help people heal. I've experienced a lot of healing in my life, and few things are more satisfying to me than hearing a singer say, "I enjoy singing again" or seeing them able to access themselves in new ways. Watching someone become kinder to themselves. Pointing people in helpful directions and sharing what's worked for me. Even when I sing, I want the sound of my voice to be a healing medium, a vibration that communicates to the hearer -- you're precious, God loves you, and you're here for beautiful reasons. What's one thing that's part of your purpose, and how does singing resonate with that?

@Linda Donnell I cannot tell you how much your response resonates with me.
Inspiration?
Does anyone else have a "spirit performer/voice", kind of like a spirit animal? One of my "spirit performers" is Florence Foster Jenkins. She inspires me to do what brings me joy. Who inspires you?
