Truly the craziest thing happened
Iā€™m at a work offsite with 25 colleagues. Weā€™re at a hotel in the mountains of Serbia and a freak snowstorm hit. Our evening event included a live band but only the drummer and bass player made it up the mountain. The other half of the band got stranded along the way. The hotel has an electric piano in the lobby so I offered to play the piano and sing. We ended up playing a full set of 12 songs. My coworkers joined in on a bunch of them. I am not really at a performing level with my piano so I leaned on the vocals and just tried to focus on the rhythm with the piano. My coworkers were super impressed (and seemed to enjoy it) and I had a blast. Hereā€™s a brief clip. People joined in singing (approx 15 seconds into video)

Aint no sunshine before audition
Hey guys, been kind of unactive in the community lately but Iā€™m back. Today we were rehearsing my performance for the Berklee audition which is this Saturday. Was hoping to get some feedback on the performance and if you have any suggestions, I will take them into account.

I was thinking of you today and just saw the post! I was like man I hope he crushes his audition! Sending you lots of good vibes and have the best time. Make sure to learn as much as you can from the audition.

Vocal mic question
I currently use a Shure SM57 for my vocal mic (while playing the acoustic guitar). I find that I need to be right on top of the mic for good sound. I'd like to sing a few inches from the mic and have a little bit of freedom to move around while playing and singing. Plus when I use my ipad for lyrics/chords it's really hard to read the ipad while playing the guitar and need to be right on top of the mic. (Yes, I know, I should learn the songs better and ditch the ipad. That will happen eventually. But in the meantime....) If I have more gain (say, using a cloudlifter) will that let me back away a few inches from the mic? Or is it better just to get a different mic? And if the latter, what mic? I'd use this setup playing live and at home. Thanks!

@Brad Simon itā€™s so good, my vocal coach recommended it back in the day but I wasnā€™t focussed on improving that part of my set up back then. It makes a huge difference when youā€™re ready for it.

Before listening quick advice. If you sing in public and suck you will improve very fast in real time because the feedback is instant, if you sing in public and sound great then you will do more of it so you will improve. Both scenarios are a net win on growth. The only thing with this post is if you need validation. If you need validation to perform then you need to work on your mindset not your singing because it won't change even if you get really good, it just morphs into imposter syndrome which held me back a lot. After listening, you sound great! You could easy play a show if you did 30 songs like that, if you want to improve make sure your vocal rhythm is closer to the recording and lands with the chord changes. Follow this lesson if what I said doesn't make sense Your guitar playing is great as well!
