What are you currently reading for fun?
I just started reading "Think Again" by Adam Grant. Loving it so far. Has anyone read it? And what's on your summer reading list? 📚🤓

I've never read anything by Adam Grant, but I'd like to. I'm currently reading Isabel Allende's La Casa de los Espíritus in Spanish, which is a bit challenging for me. It's my first 400+ page book in that language!

@Andrew Woodbury I'm halfway through it! It's been interesting. I've read Cuentos de Eva Luna by the same author and I still think I prefer the latter. I have a goal of reading 5 books in Spanish this year and this one is my second so far. 🤩
Recording: From 1:1 to Hybrid Courses
Big thanks to @Carolina Vecchio for the incredible presentation today. Here's the recording for anyone who missed it or wants to relive it. As we say, you can't teach 1:1 forever. So if you have your business running and want to move on from exclusively selling your time in 1:1 lessons, Carolina's story, journey, and insights will help you immensely. We had a great Q&A at the end as well. We're happy to call Carolina a client and are so happy to see all her success. And if you want support creating your own courses, book a chat with us to tell us about your vision and see if working together makes sense: https://learnyourenglish.net/schedule

@Michael Toczek thank you for being there, even if for a bit! I was going to say 'hi', but I think you had already left!!

@Michael Toczek I'm sure we'll both figure out how to use our varied skill set to make our classes even better! I think time, experience, study and experimentation will bring that kind of clarity in time. 🙌

@Michael Toczek I feel the same as you! I also feel like there is a lot of 'legitimate stuff of life' that comes up and takes priority. I really like the feeling of moving forward, though, even if it's a tiny, tiny step!
Question about shipping
What does "shipping" your offer really mean? Just, putting it out there?

I learned this word with this meaning here at the TSN, haha, I had never heard it being used like that and it got me confused as well! Maybe it's new-ish Canadian slang?
Knowing your students video
I'm taking a look at this video and find myself feeling bad about recently losing a client because I did not know him well enough, and pushed him a little too hard and he panicked and ended the lessons. This was absolutely not a linguistic issue; it had to do with the anxiety provoked when trying to speak English in conversation. The first half of our lessons were always me talking him down from the anxiety that I think was largely provoked by his perfectionism, and I had to continually emphasize that there is no perfect communication so he needed to accept that he could make mistakes but still communicate what he needed to communicate. Unfortunalely I misjudged this on one occasion and his anxiety was provoked in a way that he found unbearable, and so I lost a client and my guess is that he has abandoned English altogether :(x2 I'm currerntly floundering a bit with another client, but now am getting down on paper exactly what I know about his needs (probably still not enough) after about 10 hours of lessons together, and am going to try to apply the info in this video to our situation and see if I can be as precise as possible about it. Both of these guys are my "target audience" if that's the right phrase, though I also need to be more precise about what that means.

I've had a student who cancelled his classes with me after 3 months because he said he got anxiety attacks before class. I thought I knew him well enough and brought tasks based on his career as a geologist and took it very slowly. Even with these highly personalized classes, in the end I felt terrible for not being able to ease his anxiety issues around English. I've also had a student cry during a toefl speaking mock test and then she also stopped having classes. A lot of the times these people really do have high anxiety or trauma around the experience of using English. Perfectionism plays an important role in this. And I decided not to take it personally. I think they have to solve this first within themselves and maybe even seek the help of a therapist.

I 100% agree with you, Michael, it's not that they are anxious people, it's that they feel a lot of anxiety (and sometimes trauma, as you mentioned) around English. And I find that these people are particularly challenging clients. Those who are perfectionists are also hard to work with (but more manageable!).
