Q & A with Erin Brophey November 13th
Wonderful Session! Many thanks to @Magda Prins-Nip for her wonderful playing of Bach and great questions. Lovely to meet @Dorothy Rubinoff and hear about her oboe journey. Many thanks to @Natalie Fulwider for asking her questions about colour in oboe playing. ( one of my fave topics.) Sending best wishes to @Christi Allison that her wrist continues to heal. Kudos to @Valerie Rollheiser for being open to me asking pointed questions. :)

@Elizabeth Glee Devereaux This seat mimics sitting on a yoga ball. I take it to very gig and happily feel at home. Here it is: https://bodybest.com/products/ergosit-seat-cushion?variant=41811499417761&currency=CAD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAACMjEZ1IX8OpIhFLurO9un2tocZqz&gclid=Cj0KCQiA_9u5BhCUARIsABbMSPudGCmh4wOxIc1Ut7pey24ps_ndKR1syfVyv3zH7k_EeditVi9LgZYaAmGoEALw_wcB

@Elizabeth Glee Devereaux Yes- there are recordings of every masterclass plus more resources in the classroom section. I hope they help you. Also- I sometimes change the weekly masterclass time- so it may just line up for you one of these days. Keep checking the calendar function.
Color?
Call it whatever, after the session I tried the vibrato thing (as well as I could) and absolutely loved the result. Thanks. @Erin Brophey

I'm SO glad.
Mussorgsky - pictures
Does anyone have any recommendations for articulation on this? I’ve heard recording where they’ll slur the 6 16th notes that go down the scale but that doesn’t help with that nasty second measure (third measure of the piece)

Erin Brophey • 7m @Christi Allison I would use a nice double tongue in this section for sure. If that isn’t in your skill set- then there are a couple options. 1) does anyone in your section double tongue? It can sound really effective if one of you double tongues and the other slurs everything. 2) you could create some slurred articulations that highlight the architecture of the line. I will post a photo below with some suggestions to add in slurs.

@Christi Allison @Carol Lowne @Christi Allison Adding in some tasteful slurs can help your tongue chill out and save the energy for the repeated passages. When I’m double-tonguing, I often throw in some single tongues here and there to give my tongue a rest and vice versa. You can use this same technique with slurring. Remember- Mussorgsky did not play a wind instrument. He did now write this part for you to sound bad. Do what you need to do to sell the music.
