Networking Sucks!
Only if you don't know how to do it. Yes, there's a science to networking. If you are attending a networking meeting expecting to sell everyone and their mothers, you are doing it wrong. Networking events are to learn about other business owners and create connections and conversations that eventually lead to deals. People love talking about themselves. If you ask the right questions, they will be talking about themselves for hours and they will fell like they had an amazing conversation. Even though they did most of the talking. Here are some questions that I use every time and they work like a charm to get them going. - What do you do? - Who's your target market? - What do you like the most about what you do? - What's new in your business? - What's the biggest challenge in your business? - What sets you apart from your competition? - Why did you start your business? - What's your most popular product/service? - How do you generate most of your business? - How did you land your last client? Take mental note of their answers and follow up. The money is in the follow up! Set up a time to do a 1-2-1 at a coffee shop, or a lunch meeting and bring up names, details that they mentioned during that first encounter. They will feel heard and understood and people love that. You will be tempted to sell your services during both encounters but try to avoid selling them. Mention what you do and leave them intrigued so they ask for more info but don't make the conversation about yourself. Then you can set another time to meet and if they are a good fit, have a deep dive conversation about how you can help them. Also, I try not to give out my business cards. I take their business cards so I am in control of the follow up. Chances are they won't call you, text you or email you after the meeting. But if you have their business card, you can make sure that next conversation takes place. What are some of your best networking strategies?

Totally agree with this approach. Networking is 100% about playing the long game and actually connecting with people. I’ve seen so many business owners dive into events thinking they need to close a deal right there, but that’s missing the mark entirely. When I go into networking, my goal is to stand out—not by talking about myself but by making the other person feel like they’re the most important person in the room. Asking deeper questions, like “Why did you start your business?” or “What’s the biggest challenge you’re facing right now?” makes you memorable because you’re showing real interest in them. I’ve found it’s this level of connection that sets the groundwork for real opportunities down the line. And I’m with you on keeping control of the follow-up. Taking their card or connecting on LinkedIn immediately after the conversation is crucial. You want to keep that conversation warm, and LinkedIn is great for letting them see your work and values in action without having to force it in the moment. For anyone else here struggling to see results from networking, remember it’s less about pitching and more about building a foundation. If you can nail that, the business will follow naturally.
The BNI networking presentation that led to 2 VBC clients ($12k+ in deals)
There's been a lot of questions here lately about lead gen and networking, so I figured I'd share this. This was a featured presentation I gave in my BNI networking group back in 2022 that led to a few discovery meetings booked, and ultimately, 2 VBC projects. Posting content is great. Strategic outreach is great. Running ads is great. Any lead gen tactics can work. But if you don't know your greater strategy, you're gonna burn out and get discouraged. At this time, I was doing in-person networking and posting short form content. My strategy was "become impossible to ignore" and make it so that once I connected with someone, they saw me everywhere, and understood what the hell I do. Meet people -> Connect online -> Post content consistently -> Keep showing up to those people After people saw me enough, when they needed video, they'd shoot me a message, or a text, or an email, or bring it up in person next time I saw them. It wasn't always apparent that things were "working" from vanity metrics alone. This presentation played into my greater strategy because it broke down "what I do" into simpler concepts, and made it more relatable for people. This is what worked (and still works) for me. It would probably work for you, too. __ All in all, know your STRATEGY, not just the tactics. And if you don't know it yet, just borrow the way I did it and adjust as you figure out what works best for you.

@Cam Jimenez Great that you were able to find another chapter that worked for you, man! Still on good terms with the people from your last chapter? I left my chapter April 2023, but quickly realized that the connections were genuine because even after I left, they still keep in contact regularly enough to keep the connections and friendships alive. Good feeling for sure

One Video Call Later, and $375 Paid!!
I had another client call, and after talking to her, her needs were not as large as my packages offered, so I quoted her my hourly rate of $75 an our for 5 hours of my work, and she agreed no problem!! I knew her previously from the events I attend, so I told her that I'll help out extra if she needs it at no additional cost, as she's extremely un-tech savvy for what I offer. Super stoked about this!!

@Bailey Nachtigal Dude, absolutely you got this shit. You're doing great work, and you've got clients who are happy with it. That's huge for momentum. Seriously. With the hourly rate stuff, it's dope to know your effective hourly rate, and have a target, but definitely aim higher. Might feel crazy to charge what would effectively be $150 an hour right now, since that is your dream number, but if you charge by the project overall, and you're selling on the value of what it can do for someone's company, then they're buying into the outcome, and not nitpicking how many hours it will take you to get it done at your hourly rate. If you dial in the discovery and sales processes, you could 100% jump to an effectively hourly rate of $150 an hour by the end of the year, if not by your next project. It's all in how things are framed, talked about, and presented.
