I want to preface this topic with one very important thing. Money is a tool and should we should not have love for a tool. In other words, don't love money for the sake of loving money. This without control can turn people into something they never wanted to be to begin with. Loving money leads to immoral behavior, greed, and theft. We should never strive to love money, but I do think we should care about it.
The reason I say we should care about it is for a couple of different reasons. One of the reasons that we should care, is that without it in our day and age it's very hard to do anything. (not impossible, just much harder) In a way money really does make our lives easier. Think about this, if you didn't have money to go to the grocery store what would you have to do? Fish? Grow your own vegetables? Raise your own animals? and each one of those things comes with it's own challenges. How are you going to make a fishing pole? How are you going to make the string? Hook? Bate? So on and so forth. Now like I said, this isn't an impossible task you could do it (really most farmers do it everyday). But it's a much harder path than just taking $20 going to the store, and purchasing some tuna or salmon.
Another reason to care is that money can buy you time. One of the most important and finite resources we have. Now you're probably asking yourself, "Money can't buy me more life, what does he mean?" and with that you're right. We certainly can't take money to the grave, and most definitely can't buy ourselves any years. But we can buy our own time that we have now. Let's look at it this way...
Let's say you have a job, and more often than not you're living paycheck to paycheck. Don't have any savings, just barely making it by each week. Now let's say that job shuts down, you're fired. How much time do you have, to find another job, before your bills start to stack up on you? I've been in this position a few times, and I'd say most people probably have a week... 2? Maybe three before they have to start borrowing. (especially if you factor someone with lots of responsibilities like a spouse, children, pets.)
Now same situation, you lose your job, or the company shuts down. But this time, you have $20,000 saved up in a bank account. Now how much time do you have to find another job? I'd say much more time than by not having any savings. This is what I mean when I say you can buy yourself time. With money you could take days, weeks, months, some people even take years off to enjoy their life outside of work.
One of my favorite reasons to care about money is because it's a powerful tool. With it you can help others in tremendous ways. Let's say you took $10,000 and went and found a homeless person. Someone with nothing. Let's say they're really an upstanding person too, not on drugs, not violent, just a person who hit a rough patch in their life. You take that $10,000 you get this person a hair cut, clean him up, get him a hotel for a couple nights, make sure he is fed, has new clothes, maybe even help him get a phone and service for a couple months. How much do you think that impacts that person? (Depending on the person but remember this is an upstanding gentleman that's hit a rough patch.) I'd argue that could totally change the mans life. Help him get back on track.
Obviously that's just a quick example, and I encourage that if you do have a lot of money come your way that you use it wisely. Just as you can do great good with it, you can also do great harm with it. Use it accordingly.
Well that's my rant for the day, tell me, do you agree? Do you disagree? Do you care about money, or do you hate it? Let me know in the comments! :)
