My older son is an old wise soul with a very particular sense of humor.
Reading is one of his superpowers!
This week, he has been sharing a joke of sorts that he learned from somewhere, which I thought was pretty witty and insightful: '...reading a book is looking at a dead tree and hallucinating.'
It was repeated so many times that it totally got into my head, and I started thinking about drawing.
So, this is what I came up with:
'...if reading a book is looking at a dead tree and hallucinating, then drawing is like bringing a dead tree back and dancing freely with its shadow.'
In adulthood, drawing is often seen as either a profession or child's play. But if we give ourselves a chance, our bodies will remember what to do with a pencil and paper; they will want to move it. Our job is just to show up in front of the paper and the pen... that's it.
Everything else outside of that... is excess.
