How can I get better quality technicians to apply?
3 things you can do right now to get better quality technicians to apply!
I talk to shops all the time who tell me that they aren’t getting applications from the experienced and knowledgeable techs that they’re looking for.
First off, let me give you a reality check…
After generating over 100,000 applications over the past 6 years for independent shops, I can tell you that 1 in 4 applicants will be specifically qualified for the position that you are offering.
Yep, 25%.
And that’s if you have a great ad and you’re advertising in the right places where techs hang out.
It seems that great ads not only attract great techs but they also stir the blood of every backyard mechanic who's changed their own oil at one point in their life.
So, if you aren’t getting 1 qualified technician for every 4 applications you receive, here’s what you should be talking about:
-MONEY - competitive compensation (salary + benefits)
-RESPECT - open door policy / listen to ideas / acknowledgement (shop culture + communication)
-GROWTH - professional and life skills training with a pathway to advancement (life works inside + outside of the shop)
There are lots of things that good techs want in a shop but after talking with hundreds of techs, I’ve boiled it down to the big three categories above.
Make sure that you spend some time getting clear on what you offer within each of these categories and then talk about them in your help wanted ads.
Talk about them on your phone calls.
Talk about them with your tool guy.
Talk about them in your social media feed.
Never forget, there’s risk involved in applying for a new job.
Make your shop compelling enough to overcome that risk by talking about the big three.
