Fishing for Techs: A 3-Step Strategy for Landing Top Talent
Let me tell you a story about Ron and Bill, two seasoned shop owners attending an industry conference.
Over drinks, they discover a shared dream: catching a Blue Marlin, a prize catch for any angler.
So they make a friendly $100 bet on who will achieve this feat first.
Ron's approach is haphazard.
He grabs some donuts for bait, a cheap fishing pole from Walmart, and heads to Lake Michigan, hoping for the best.
Bill, however, takes a strategic approach.
He researches the best bait (tuna, mackerel, squid), locates prime fishing spots in Hawaii, and invests in top-notch equipment.
He even learns techniques for handling a hooked Blue Marlin who are known for their long, acrobatic fights, which can last for hours.
Who do you think wins the bet?
Of course it’s Bill.
His success comes from a well-planned strategy and a willingness to adapt his tactics until he succeeds.
As shop owners, you’re all fishing for skilled technicians in a competitive market.
Just like Bill, you need three things to succeed:
  1. The right bait: Compelling job ads that showcase your shop's unique benefits and culture.
  2. The right fishing hole: Advertise on channels where top technicians hang out, even if they aren’t actively looking for work.
  3. The right strategy for reeling them in: Following up promptly (the right way) with applicants, providing a smooth hiring process, keeping them interested and engaged until the tool box drops.
Of course, this story is made up but the lesson is real and we live it everyday here at Technician Find.
Next month at AAPEX I’m going to teach you how to be a successful fisherman like Bill.
But we’ll be fishing for techs.
Hope to see you in Las Vegas!
