WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT MODESTY?
1 Timothy 2:9-10 (NKJV)
“In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.”
Understanding “Modest Apparel” in Depth
The term “modest apparel” is foundational to understanding what Paul is teaching. Let’s break it down:
“Modest” (Greek: “kosmios” - κόσμιος)
The Greek word “kosmios” used here means more than just covering the body. It conveys the idea of being well-arranged, orderly, and appropriate. It suggests an outward appearance that reflects a heart of humility and respect for oneself and others. Modesty in this sense doesn’t just refer to how much skin is covered but involves choosing clothing that suits the occasion and does not draw excessive or inappropriate attention.
- Well-Arranged and Orderly: This implies that clothing should be chosen thoughtfully and with care, avoiding anything chaotic or overly flashy. An orderly appearance reflects a disciplined and intentional heart that seeks to honor God rather than oneself.
- Appropriate and Respectful: Appropriate clothing is respectful of the context or setting you are in, whether it’s a church service, social gathering, or work environment. It should reflect a sense of dignity and propriety, showing that you respect yourself, others, and God.
“Apparel” (Greek: “katastolē” - καταστολή)
The Greek word “katastolē” refers to a long, flowing garment. In Paul’s cultural context, this word was used to describe a modest outer garment that covered the body properly. It symbolizes being fully and decently clothed, as opposed to wearing something revealing or suggestive.
- Covering and Concealing, Not Hiding: Modest apparel is about covering and concealing parts of the body in a respectful manner, without being overly strict or restrictive. It doesn’t mean hiding yourself in a way that diminishes your identity, but dressing in a way that represents dignity and self-control.
- Cultural Relevance: While the specific style of clothing (like a katastolē) may differ in modern times, the principle remains the same. Today, modest apparel might look different depending on the cultural context, but it always involves being decently covered and dressed in a way that doesn’t cause others to stumble or focus solely on your physical appearance.
Appropriateness: What Does It Mean?
When Paul talks about modest apparel, he’s referring to clothing that is appropriate for women who profess godliness. The word “appropriate” is key because it means that modesty isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. It requires discernment and sensitivity to the situation and environment.
1. Appropriate to the Setting:
Clothing should match the setting you are in, showing respect for the occasion and people around you. For example, what is modest and appropriate for a church service may look different from what’s modest and appropriate for a day at the beach.
- In a church setting, modesty might involve wearing clothing that covers the shoulders, chest, and knees, and that isn’t tight-fitting or provocative. It’s about drawing attention to worship rather than to oneself.
- In a casual setting like a family gathering, modesty might involve avoiding overly tight or revealing clothing but still dressing comfortably and respectably.
2. Avoiding Provocation or Distraction:
Modest apparel should not provoke or draw undue attention to oneself in a way that distracts others. This includes avoiding clothing that is too tight, too short, or too revealing. It’s about dressing in a way that doesn’t make others uncomfortable or lead to thoughts that are not honoring to God.
3. Being Mindful of the Message Clothing Sends:
The way you dress communicates something about your values, self-image, and intentions. Modest apparel means choosing clothing that communicates a message of dignity, humility, and self-respect, rather than materialism, sensuality, or vanity.
4. Respecting One’s Body as the Temple of the Holy Spirit:
Dressing appropriately shows that you respect your body as the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). It means presenting yourself in a way that acknowledges your body is a gift from God and should be honored, not exploited or showcased in a way that is disrespectful or degrading.
Practical Application of Modest Apparel and Appropriateness
1. Be Thoughtful About Your Wardrobe Choices:
Consider your clothing choices prayerfully and thoughtfully. Ask yourself: Does this outfit honor God and reflect my identity as a woman of faith? Am I choosing this because I feel pressured to look a certain way or because it truly aligns with my values and respect for God?
2. Dress for the Occasion with Decency and Propriety:
When selecting an outfit, think about where you’re going, who you’ll be with, and what is appropriate for that environment. For example:
- For a church service, choose clothing that is modest and respectful, focusing on worship rather than fashion.
- For social events, choose clothing that is attractive yet doesn’t draw undue attention to specific body parts or exude an immodest impression.
3. Avoid Clothing That Seeks to Impress or Flaunt Wealth:
Paul also speaks against costly clothing and elaborate adornment in this passage. This is because wearing extravagant clothing or accessories can sometimes signal a desire to flaunt wealth or status, which contradicts the humility that should characterize a Christian’s life. Instead, choose clothing that reflects contentment and a focus on inner beauty.
4. Consider How Your Clothing Affects Others:
Modesty is not just about your own comfort or preference but about how your appearance impacts others. Dressing modestly and appropriately is a way to love others by not causing them to struggle or feel distracted by your appearance. Ask yourself: Does my clothing help others see Christ in me, or is it drawing attention to my body?
5. Seek Guidance from Scripture and Prayer:
If you’re unsure about whether something is modest or appropriate, seek God’s guidance through prayer and study of the Word. Also, seek counsel from trusted believers who can provide guidance and perspective on your choices.
