Hi, today I'll be talking about the book "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey. This post is part one of the 3 part series I will be posting.
There are two ways to improve ourselves and change our lives: the first one is to work on certain skills to accomplish certain behaviors; the alternative is to take a long way and work on our character, the fundamentals of our habits and beliefs that form our view of the world, to make self-improvement a habit, and that's what the book is all about. Let's get started.
So when I was a teen, I was easily annoyed by my neighbor's dog that wakes me up in the morning because I was being reactive. As I grew up, I figured I can be proactive. I can complain all I want about my salary or dream about how my life can get better, but if I don't take matters in hand and build it, it's no better than waiting on a bus to take me to an imaginary land with rainbows and ponies, which will never happen. Habit number one: be proactive and act like any successful people who land dream positions or build great businesses by meeting people, knocking on doors, and making phone calls.
They get what they want by taking initiative, staying consistent, and living by their own principles.
Now imagine yourself going to a funeral of a loved one. You walk in the chapel, see flowers, hear soft ambient music, you feel and share the sorrow of your friends and family mourning. As you reach the end of the hall, you take a look inside the casket and to your surprise, you come face to face with yourself. This is your funeral. So if you were to die three years, seven years, or ten years from now, what would you want people to remember you as? Habit number two: always begin with the end in mind. Try this exercise with me. State what you want to be remembered as if you were to die ten years from now. Ask yourself what do you want your friends and family to say about you, what you want to accomplish before you die, and what do you want to leave behind. To accomplish that, what you need to do is to get started right now.
