research fields

Hi all, I am interested in carrying out research, not a research project however I would want to work with a professor/researcher as their research lab assistant over the winter for a month or so full time which seems more plausible. As from my previous post, you may know I am a Mathematics enthusiast however I am not at the level at which I can contribute to PhD level research. Which field closest or similar to mathematics would be more hands-on where I can actually assist the professor with their work rather something theoretical... High school subjects wise I have an interest in Maths >> Physics ~= Chem. So based on your replies I can reach out to different professors (after reviewing their work and whether their research actually excites me or not of course). Thanks a ton!
