The difference between coaching, consulting, and mentoring
Coaching, mentoring, and consulting often get used interchangeably but each have distinct dynamics.
Coaching is more about facilitating self discovery. This happens through great question asking.
I personally love this modality because I often just need someone to verbally process with.
I need someone to ask me the right questions so I can discover the answers within.
It's easy for ideas and strategies to get all jumbled up inside. Getting it out has been a super valuable.
A good coach doesn't need to have any experience in your field but can help you accomplish massive goals and create a ton of momentum and clarity.
MENTORING is more sharing based on your past experiences, your knowledge and wisdom. It's giving advice and perspective because you've gone through the same stuff.
CONSULTING is more specific expert advice on specific problems. For example, consulting a local business on how to implement Facebook ads and AI would be more consulting.
It's helped me to understand the variations so I don't mix up the relational dynamic.
This can vary between clients as well.
So if you run a type of coaching/ consulting biz you should clarify what hat you are wearing with that client instead of trying to force a specific way on them.
I personally do all 3 in my coaching business. Depending on the client it will be more heavily focused on coaching or some on consulting.
Building a personal brand where you can do all 3 is the jackpot in my opinion.
You've gone through the transformation yourself so you can effectively mentor and provide amazing wisdom, guidance, and perspective.
You've acquired specific skills so you understand the nuances of the problems your clients are facing. This enables you to consult to a high degree.
And you've gotten good at active listening and strategic question asking. This allows you to be a great coach.
You don't need all three however.
For example, maybe you are an agency owner that serves a local business like chiropractors.
You are burnt out on the done for you service side of the business and you want to bolt on a coaching type offer.
You've never been a chiropractor so it's not like you can mentor chiropractors.
You can however consult. There are always people out there that want to learn how to fish instead of having someone do it for them.
Consulting them and their team on how to implement marketing systems is a very proven model.
This also changes the relational dynamic and in my opinion makes it much more enjoyable and scalable.
With done for you services you often get treated like a commodity and an employee.
As a consultant they usually perceive you as an expert and it's a much better frame to do business from.
Hopefully this helps someone get some clarity.
