"Open Gate" Camera System are taking over, what you need to know.
I know I might be in the minority of hardcore camera nerds here, but wanted to bring attention to a term you may see thrown around with new cameras that are hitting the market, especially with the Panasonic S5 IIX hitting the streets now. The term "Open Gate" dates back to motion picture film cameras that were able to shoot directly to the stock, or in modern digital terms, use the camera's entire sensor to record the video signal, rather than cropping the image.
What does this mean for us content creators?
The ability to shoot both vertical and horizontal videos at the same time with a single setup! This past month I found a beautiful example from the floor of NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) where two of my favorite creators were shooting 6k resolution video in vertically and repurposed that content to deliver a 4k horizontal.
Here's a great video they made on how they pulled this off.
What do you need to know?
It requires some gear; they explain what they used - but I've been doing something similar with 4k shooting to 1080p upload. It just requires you to know how to frame your image and repurpose these shoots in post.
What are your thoughts, and if you would, hit like on this if you're a camera nerd (like me) and want more content like that here?
