Google just announced “Willow”, their new quantum chip.
Quantum computing may be the single biggest technological leap of this century so far (in my opinion).
Quantum computers can computes tasks in seconds that take classical computers more years to compute than the universe has been around for!
That means they will inevitably eventually crack the very cryptography that protects Bitcoin. 😵
So should you be worried?
Well this same cryptography is used for all military systems, including the world’s nuclear arsenal.
So I think there’s bigger things to worry about other than Bitcoin.
But still - what about our BTC?
Well, Bitcoin is not a static thing, it's an evolving system of code. So Bitcoin will undoubtedly evolve in the coming years to include quantum resistant cryptography.
And now with this news it’ll likely become a much higher priority for most core devs to look into how to upgrade the cryptography.
So the short answer is no, you don’t need to worry.
Nonetheless, Quantum computing is an incredibly big deal, so keep a look out for future development here.
