Metabolic Issues and ADHD
I listened to a great podcast yesterday that talked about the cause of all DSM-5 conditions, which includes ADHD. Dr. Chris Palmer, an associate professor at Harvard for 28 years, talks about the origin of all mental illness. I want to disclaim that technically ADHD is labeled as a disorder or mental illness. However ADHD is not something wrong with the mind, just variance from the standard. ADHD is not something wrong, it is something unique that we possess that is different from the "norm". It doesn't have to be a limiting factor in our lives, it is not a behavioral issue, but an issue of metabolics. Dr. Palmer argues that ADHD can even be fixed. In this podcast Mel Robbins (who has ADHD and children with ADHD) talks with Dr. Palmer about how ADHD can be caused and exaggerated by diet. Our brains "eat" up to 20% of our glucose and consume roughly 1/5 of our oxygen. Any Neurodivergent person, ADHD or not, simply has a difference of metabolic consumption in their brains. Dr. Palmer describes studies where participants with ADHD can almost completely eliminate any symptoms by doing and "elimination diet." An elimination helps you discover what foods you may have an allergy or intolerance to. Sometimes our intolerance can be as little as a slight stomach ache after eating. Our intolerances to food can affect our brains capability to metabolize food causing a deficiency and exaggerating our ADHD symptoms. A better diet paired with exercise can improve symptoms to the point that they replace medication. In general it was a great podcast and very informative, I am going to link to it in this post.
