Commonplace Book Project
Hello! I'm thinking of starting a new commonplace book, and I watched a ton of videos on YouTube. Maybe too many videos, because now I can't decide on what type of journals to use, if I should go with ruled paper or graph paper and so on and so forth. My main concerns are: - should I use a pocket size or A5 size? - ruled, graph or dotted paper? - bound journals or something like the filofax system? Since it'll be something I do for memory keeping, I'd like for the notebooks to be the same size, easy to archive once finished and easy to replace or refill. Plus I'd like for the paper to be ink friendly, so not too thin but not too heavy either. I'm planning to use highlighters and even maybe brush pens. I have unused notebooks I could use for this little project of mine, but some of them seem to be hard to get online (I bought them in bookstores before the pandemic). So any advice on how to approach this matter? Do you do commonplacing and what notebooks/supplies you use?

@Valentina Bertani ... I love how you've thought through your needs. I agree that the A5 is a good size, but can become a "chunky monkey" when it's all done. I like the feel of the bulk, but I do agree with you that it can be awkward. I think the binder idea is a really good one, but you're right: it's tricky to find the paper sometimes. I love gel too, but I find that I can write longer with fountain pens without hand cramp or fatigue. Have you found your favorite gel pen? I'm curious if you're still experimenting with that! :)

@Valentina Bertani ... I love Pentel best. Sarasa and Pilot (the Juice line) are next best for me. I'm so glad you've discovered gel!
Adversaria to Zibaldone - what do you call your notebook collection?
Love this article about keeping a zibaldone! https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/how-to-keep-a-zibaldone-a-13thcentury-answer-to-tumblr I like to call my notebook collection my "adversaria." It sounds so cool and old-fashioned to me! 😁

What do you do with your finished/completed journals?
i was just wondering how people are storing completed journals/notebooks and how long everyone is intending to keep them for? I'm thinking more for ones that you use to keep your 'journal' pages in. So private thoughts and musings that you might never want others to see. How do you store them? How often do you go back and look at completed ones? How long do you intend to keep them for? Forever? I'm close to the end of my first journal and am getting nervous about what I do now!!!

I use metal filing cabinets with locks (because I try to be as honest and raw as I write and I wouldn't want someone to read any of it and think I really hated them when I was just having a bad day and getting out my frustration). I have a review system by which every year I look back at the notes that were taken on this day a year ago and see if anything is particularly interesting or revealing to inspire my writing today.
One journal or several?
So the conventional bullet journal wisdom is that if you keep everything in one journal you will always know where everything is, it integrates your life, etc. But recently I started an art notebook to keep track of ideas for paintings and it quite rapidly turned into a kind of bullet journal. So my question is: do you use just one journal at a time, or do you have several on the go at once? What do you put in a different journal? And what do you like about your approach?

I keep one "everything" A5 journal for all things (which ends up being about one a month). I keep separate B5 notebooks for copywork (a very old method of improving your writing by copying other people's writing) and drawing practice, A6 notebooks for my Sunday weekly check-in with myself, and 3x5 cards as indexes for the A5 journals.
Log Book/Journal with Time Stamps
Does anyone else keep a journal with exact time stamps or am I the only one? Every day, I write down my everyday life. Sometimes I don't write for weeks, and then I have to go back and browse chats and photos to get the exact time, but a journal entry would look like this: 7:14 wake up 7:49 take out my dog 8:05 coffee at the dining table 8:20 sit at my desk, start writing emails ... all the way down to when I had lunch, when I watched a show, and when I went to bed. Please tell me I'm not the only one!
