I’m singing What Baking Can Do this week for my Acting A Song class. Waitress vibes all around!! πŸ₯§ Also, I love that the length of time of this process allows for the brain to simmer on low with the story instead of a raging boil
World premiere -- need your feedback
All right y'all -- this character's been kicking around in my noggin for YEARS, and I think I finally found a format in which he can serve the world. :) Introducing Duke Money: Multi-Style Vocal Pedagogy Expert and Biscuit Consultant. Duke Money is Broadway's secret weapon, clandestinely coaching some of musical theatre's greatest talents and secretly ensuring career longevity for stars from the world's great stages. Watch as Noah and I share a snippet from Mr. Money's first official interview (We're planning a podcast empire, Noah and me.) where he begins to talk about some of the foundational basics of vocal technique. Lemme know what you think! Did Duke teach you anything or remind you of anything important? :) https://share.descript.com/view/M4aewlRg0Iy

My successful EPA
I went to an EPA a couple months ago. They were holding a call for The Queen of Versailles in NYC, and I was like -- that's in Boston all summer, I should put my face in front of them. I watched the documentary it was based on, decided there was one character I could be right for, and I decided to sing "Holding to the Ground" from FALSETTOS with a little lyric twist. I changed the key, transposed it myself in Finale, and rehearsed the shit out of it. I even did it for my students in studio class (and got some terrific feedback -- thanks beauties.) I took a train to NYC, didn't tell many folks I was going, and wandered around solo until my audition time. I got to Ripley Grier super early, rolled up to the ID counter, and saw I was standing next to one of my long-time LA kids (who's now very much an adult and kind of tearing it up in NYC these days.) We hugged big time, and she shared with me she was having some vocal scares after a big contract she'd just done. We grabbed a room, and I was able to give her some body work and SOVTs to work with until she could get in to see her NYC teacher. It was a gift to see each other, and it was hilarious that I showed up for an audition and ended up teaching. It's my purpose. My audition was successful -- I got an impressed, "Oh okaaaay" from the pianist :). I sang my song well. Carrie Gardner said "thank you," and I left. I didn't hear anything back, and I look back on the experience, and I did very good work. That was a successful audition. And I got to help a student and friend who I love very much.

This resonates with me. We define success for ourselves.
Competitive Edge: Give πŸ”₯
When I was 23, I met career coach Barbara Deutsch when she visited the company at The Lost Colony on the Outer Banks of NC. After she talked to me for 5 minutes, she said, "Your competitive edge is giving. If you give, you'll be good to go. I didn't know what she meant be a competitive edge, but what she said rang true. As I was jogging this morning, I thought about Barbara and what she said, and I was like, dammit, she was right. And giving is what I want to encourage this community to do -- makes us all better. One thing we'll have here is The Terrific Teachers in Our Community List -- a place where singers can find all the members of this community who are active teachers, chat with them, and find out how they can work together. All these points of view and multifaceted perspectives πŸ’Ž -- boom! Please tell me other resource lists and info treasure chests you'd like! What I'm considering so far: access to scores and sheet music, reaching out to Appcompanist to check out a discount or bulk subscription code, recommended acting teachers, books, workshops, etc. Let me know what would help most! PS Barbara Deutsch turned out to be a dear friend who guided me through a lot of challenges. She was even at our wedding. πŸ’™ She'll be on the resource lists for sure.

We encourage each other, stoke generosity, and remember there's only one you, and somebody needs to her the story only you can sing. STEP 1: Introduce yourself below! (βœ‚οΈ copy paste these questions πŸ‘‡) πŸ“ Where are you from? and/or Where do you live now? 🎡 What song(s) are you currently working on? πŸ¦„ Wave a magic wand and make one thing about your artist life true. What would happen? STEP 2: Read the rules and find out what you can start using in the classroom.

πŸ“ Where are you from? and/or Where do you live now? Hi! I’m from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania β€” the Christmas city πŸŽ„ After living in North Carolina (Roll Phoenix!) and some other places short-term, I’m back in Bethlehem. 🎡 What song(s) are you currently working on? I’m currently focusing on building a vocal book that represents me that I love. Two songs I’m considering adding are True Love from Frozen and Is It Really Me? from 110 in the Shade. πŸ¦„ Wave a magic wand and make one thing about your artist life true. What would happen? Small wave πŸͺ„ - I would be paid to perform. Big wave πŸͺ„πŸͺ„ - I would be sending my parents postcards from all across the country as I travelled and performed in a national tour or worked regionally. My dad used to send me postcards when he travelled for business. It would mean a lot to me to do the same.
