How to monetize a product?
Hi everyone, let's say I have a great product (in my opinion) that is targeted at a specific group of people. It's the type of product that you can live without, but makes your equipment usage at work more efficient. If you have 1 piece, you don't really the need the 2nd one unless you brake it or lose it. I don't own a small business yet but I'm going in that direction and every bit of advice and help is welcomed. I'm just a guy who likes 3D modeling, 3D printing and everything else related to mechanical engineering. Because of that, people in my environment know that I like to make things and I was asked by one of them could I make something useful for him, which will reduce the daily costs of material at his job. The response for the first few pieces was excellent, and that is why I need someone with more experience to explain to me how can I monetize my product? Thanks in advance.

First update. After few hours of back and forth texting between me and my targeted customer, here are the news: I skepticaliy sent a picture of a product to him, not knowing what to expect. He was curious and wanted to know more about it and also what would be the starting price. I explained the key features of my design which he recognized looking at the photo. He said that he had never seen something like that before and immediately ordered 5 pieces, because the price was OK to him. He brought up his concerns about potential copycats who may buy 1 and try making their own, or even not buy but just try copying it deductively. I said that I'm aware of that possibility. I personally don't know him, maybe it works out, maybe not. However I will pay the delivery costs this time which are 3-4$. For (potential) upcoming orders, the delivery is on him, that's the agreement. The only thing bothering me is how easy the design can be stolen. My conlusion is that I must try otherwise I won't learn.
Is there anything illegal to 3D print?
There are practically no restrictions for what you can print for others as a service or to sell, as long as it doesn't break any laws locally, such as 3D printed guns. You have to be aware of copyright if you are printing someone else's design.

Copyright is a real thing no doubt, but there are countries where 3D printing industry is underdeveloped. There are Instagram profiles and web pages based on a particular 3D models that can be found on popular sites like Printables, Cults 3D, MakerWordl etc. that are mainly free or cost very little. Their bussiness model is very simple: download STLs-post pictures and timelapses on social media-print. There is no particular local law that controls this type of behavior.

I believe that at some point in time, 3D printing will be inevitable for all kinds of applications, just like today but on a greater scale and much more available to end users. Like when PCs were invented. I know a handful of parents who bought their kids some entry level 3D printers so that they can develop their creativity and problem solving abilities. Thumbs up for them 👍
