In your introduction, answer these 4 questions: ➡️ What is your name (preferred pronouns as well, if you don't mind) ➡️ Why did you decide to join The Unexpected Shape Café? ➡️ What is your favorite book? ➡️ What are you interested in writing about? We can’t wait to meet you! If you'd like to share anything else as well, feel free! And welcome!

Hi everyone, I'm Julie! My pronouns are she/they. I'm a multiply-disabled and neuroqueer educator, consultant, and writer based near Tkaronto (Toronto, Canada). I have a project called "The Seasonal Body" that focusses on the intersection of disability justice, nature connection, food justice, and body liberation. This has included non-fiction writing, though I sadly haven't been writing as much during the past year as I've been more focussed on my consulting business. I help institutions and individuals learn how to make nature connection more accessible - which is very fulfilling work, but I miss writing! And I've been in a bit of an existential crisis about how to navigate my identity as a writer/creative person while trying to build a business (with very few spoons, and currenly relying financially on social assistance). Recently I come up with a new writing plan that focusses on nature writing, which is both enjoyable for me, and integrates with my business. Part of the mission of my work is to create virtual nature connection experiences (geared towards disabled folks and others who cannot access nature spaces), so my writing can be an extension of this by creating immersive and sensory-filled experiences with descriptive nature scenes (which I can share in my upcoming newsletter and podcast). I would also like to write personal essays about my experiences with nature as a disabled person, which I hope to submit to various publications, and down the road compile into a book. With this new plan, I've been able to get back into writing over the past month, and I'm having fun experimenting! I even submitted a piece to a publication. I'm also trying to learn from various resources about writing and creativity, so that I can improve my craft and have better structures in place. And I'm creating a reading list of nature memoirs and other non-fiction nature writing as inspiration (which is a genre I already love). I'm also trying to grow my writing communities, and have been getting more involved in some writing groups.
