Declined Proposal Blues
Freelancers, I could use some encouragement and advice! I just heard back from a potential client who declined my proposal, saying my pricing was higher than expected. For context, this was a $2.3 million build, and they’ve decided to handle the design themselves. While I don’t think I did anything wrong in the proposal process, it’s disappointing to lose such a significant project. This is my first year freelancing, and one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is the lack of a team to lean on for support and encouragement. It can feel isolating, especially when setbacks like this happen. How do you bounce back from moments like this? Any tips for staying motivated and continuing to believe in your value as a freelancer would mean a lot. I know we’ve all been there, and hearing how others have pushed through would be so helpful!

Can interior designers be introverted ?
So I am an introvert and when I look for information for my business I realize that most Interior designers are extroverted? So how do you sell yourself as an introverted interior designer?

I am very much an introvert! As Emilee said, most of your time can be spent at home. I schedule no more than one in-person meeting or call per day so that I have time to breathe. Rarely do I have more than a couple of meetings per week.

@Elizabeth Eigenbauer I have a list of positive affirmations I say aloud before and after client meetings. It's cheesy but it has been a game changer for my confidence.

I'm also not a tax or legal professional but my accountant told me to switch to a S-corp once I made $100,000 annually. He said it is not beneficial to switch if you are making less than $100,000. He said switching to a S-corp can help save a lot in taxes. It's a bit more admin as @Preston Neubert mentioned, but it could save you a lot of money in the long run.
Timing of flat fee payments
Hi all, I typically freelance directly for builders, but I have a project where the homeowner will be paying me directly. The project is rather large, and I would like to do a flat fee with a cap on the hours. I’m not sure how to break up the payments. The flat fee will be roughly $10,000. I will be putting together selections for the clients new build. When working with a builder, I typically require half of the payment to get started and the other half when I am finished. I’m hesitant to do that when dealing with a homeowner I have just met. Any thoughts would be appreciated.!
