“I’m in business, not IT. Cybersecurity is too complicated!” Yeah, it sucks... so I made it easy for a business to see the big picture!

Cybersecurity skills
I just got my first cybersecurity position. I have been in IT for 15+ years. I was wondering what are the must have cybersecurity skills? What are the areas within cybersecurity that are in demand? Also, what is a good leaning platform?

Hey man, congrats! Love to see that. Pivoting from IT to Cyber is highly recommended :)
intro from somebody in tech, but eyeing pivot to different tech role
Hola 👋, I found @Nic M on YouTube and after hearing him reference this group a few times in his videos, am finally joining up. I'm currently a support engineer at an infrastructure SaaS and for the most part I've really liked my job. I'm interested in the tech, make comfortable money, love my team, and have good work-life-balance/get to work remote. Living the dream, right? But lately I've been having a rough time of it (we got bought and waters are a little choppy) and I've been looking at a job change and maybe even a role change (to security engineering). Something that really caught my eye in one of @Nic M 's videos was how he distinguished security *ops* roles from security eng roles (screenshot) and how avoiding ops roles is a good way to avoid tough shift work (having worked in a NOC (network operations center)) I believe him! I'm basically at an impasse between being a support engineer at a new place, going into security engineering (probably application security engineer, though I'm closer to understanding cloud security stuff given my background), or QA engineering (something I know very little about). One thing I really want in my next job is continue the teamwork vibe I have as a support engineer. There is no stress about taking time off since work is easily traded back and forth. And there is specialization, but no silos. We work as a team every day. Application security engineering doesn't seem to get as much love as SOC stuff out here, so I'm excited to learn more.

@Ralph M. Used to be a SOC analyst. Spend time with a lot of security engineers. Being good at SOC work is pretty technical, and benefits from a wide understanding of different computing/technical concepts.
Transitioning from sales to Cybersecurity…super excited!

Hey - sales will actually help you a TON in cyber. Cyber is a business function, so understanding what businesses want and how to get biz buy-in is a high value, uncommon skill. I was a SOC analyst and went to cyber sales - man, it really changed my perspective on how things work. There are several ways to get into cyber. Some things to ask yourself: 'Do I actually like this? Do I want to do heavily technical work, or something else? Do I want to work with computers or work with people?'
