When do you share your writing...
Dear community members in the Unexpected Shape Cafe, When do you share with family and friends that you are in the process of writing (a book, an essay - whatever it may be)? Once you've begun the process? Once you have an idea? Once you have a manuscript? I find myself thinking about all the aspiring writers and musicians in my circle and feel nervous, some slight imposter syndrome, and fear of envy, to share with them that I, too, am on this journey to share my creativity. What are your thoughts?

@Malorie Nilson thank you so much for sharing your insights here. 'Premature sense of completeness' is absolutely something I relate to but have never been able to put my finger on how to define it/call it.

@Danne Jobin thank you!
Introductions ⭐
This is the introduction thread. Say hi, tell us where you’re from and what your writing is all about! In your introduction, answer these 4 questions: ➡️ What is your name (preferred pronouns as well, if you don't mind) ➡️ Why did you decide to join The Unexpected Shape Café? ➡️ What is your favorite book? ➡️ What are you interested in writing about? We can’t wait to meet you! If you'd like to share anything else as well, feel free! And welcome!

My Name is Fluency (she/her). I joined the Unexpected Shape Cafe to find a community of writers who are in the process of returning to writing. Trying to find my shared humanity, I guess. I am in the intensive course and very excited to be here. Since it's so difficult to pick one, I will share that my favourite genre is romance. I am interested in writing about food and cooking.

@Esme Wang yes of course, Seven Days in June by Tia Williams and Honey and Spice by Babalola are two of my favorite romance novels.
The Work You Do, The Person You Are
Still one of my favorite articles from The New Yorker: The Work You Do, the Person You Are by Toni Morrison. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/06/05/toni-morrison-the-work-you-do-the-person-you-are

My blog post: The missing ingredient in gratitude practices
I recently wrote a blog post on my Substack that seemed to really resonate with a lot of people. It’s about what’s often missing from gratitude practices: https://madelleine.substack.com/p/the-missing-ingredient-in-gratitude

thank you so much for writing this. I can see why it has resonated with others, it has resonated with me, too. I have been engaging in self-compassion practise and the first step is to sit with your suffering and then consider the shared humanity in your suffering. You have captured it so well when you write that gratitude practise: "needs to be married with a deep recognition of everything that is difficult, too".
