RLS, CLS, OLS not supported lakehouse and warehouse
Hello Fabricators, I am currently working on a project where the existing Power BI reports will be migrates to Fabric eco-system. I was really excited about the "direct lake" mode, where the Power BI connects directly to the semantic models in Fabric. However, the lack of support for granular access controls in Fabric warehouses - RLS and OLS is a major and a critical limitation, because of which I have to resort to the conventional way of the import mode. 1. I hope that I am proven wrong and I am missing something out here. 2. If my analysis is correct, I wish that either a "unified RLS, OLS, CLS" feature is introduced in Fabric across lakehouses, warehouses and Power BI or the existing RLS, OLS, CLS are supported in Power BI for direct lake mode too. The existing Power BI set-up has RLS and CLS systematically defined. And I was looking for approaches to migrate or recreate the same security policies now in Fabric set-up. But the first surprise hit me when I noticed that "manage roles" is disabled in Power BI, when connected to data source in direct lake mode (another term for this mode is "live connection"). Then I explored Warehouse in details and came across "security policies" feature, defined using T-SQL statements, only to find that these are not meant for Power BI connected to the warehouse. These access controls apply only to those users trying to access the warehouse from the Fabric workspace or SQL end point. Discovered another feature "Data marts", which is in preview and thought of using it in Gold layer instead of Warehouse. On one hand, this has the same intuitive UI for defining RLS, OLS, exactly same as that in Power BI. However, it has other limitations: 1. Max size supported in Data marts is 100 GB. So not scalable beyond an extent. 2. It is meant primarily for self-service analytics persona and not for replicating the complete Warehouse. 3. Data ingestion into marts is possible only via Dataflow Gen2, not possible via Copy Data activity or notebooks.

@Chinmay Phadke I think it is RLS in the Warehouse, not the semantic model. RLS in the semantic model should not fallback to DirectQuery. TE license is cheap and you can have a trial. Go to tabulatoreditor.com/learn if you want more info and instructional videos from Kurt Buhler. It will help you a lot in your semantic modelling, not only for the RLS/ OLS 😉🧑‍💻

@Geir Forsmo Hei! Using import mode, it should be the same as without Fabric. Should also work in direct lake. If you need to see %of total, you need an aggregated table, as the RLS filter can not be removed using DAX.

@Mubaraq Abdulmaleek absolutely. Then it is back to Excel 🤣
Direct Lake mode - change "source lakehouse" of semantic model
I have the following situation: We built up a PoC, which was very successfull and now i would like to switch to productive mode. Therefore, I want to "migrate" into different workspaces. This means I have a Productive workspace, where the user will get access to the report. So far so good, I can use deployment pipeline to copy lakehouse, semantic model and report. But the problem is, that the semanctic model is still related to the "old" lakehouse in my development workspace. Now I would like to change the "source lakehouse" of the semantic model but I have found no solution so far. Does anybody have an idea or even experience with this situation?

You should be able to perform this task using Tabular Editor 3 as well. You will need Enterprise for Fabric, but if you sign up for a trail, and it is explained in the Learn material provided by Tabular Editor, where you can use workspace mode to connect to both the workspace and database.json file using Tabular Editor 3.
5k members, 1200 threads and now a 2nd team member
Hi everyone, things have gone fast since I launched this community back in January 2024!! I still remember my proud post when we reached 50 members (see below). Well, recently we crossed a previously unimaginable milestone of 5k members. Thank you to every one of you that chooses to spend your time here learning Fabric and engaging with the community. So far, we have had over 1200 conversations/ threads about Microsoft Fabric (the search bar contains a wealth of information!). I hope it has helped you learn Microsoft Fabric. The best thing is that this is just the start, I will continue to invest in this community because I can see it's making (at least a small) difference. But a community of this size is difficult to manage alone (especially as now I spend a lot of time in Fabric Dojo too). As such, I'm delighted to announce that I've brought on board Maleek - @Mubaraq Abdulmaleek to support yourselves (and me!) around the community. Maleek is hugely passionate about Fabric (he was one of the first members of this community back in January!), DP-600 certified and eager to learn as much as possible. He'll help new members get onboarded, help members find stuff (course content/ previous answers to community questions), and generally help make sure you have a great experience here. Great to have you here, Maleek! Soon, I'll share what I have planned for this community in 2025 and beyond. Thank you so much for being a part of this community we're building!

Congrats to both of you (and the community)!🥳
Changing the source of existing Powerbi reports.
Hello, Is it possible to change the source of the existing Powerbi reports? From an on-premises database to Lakehouse in Fabric? I want to change the data source. Right now the reports are getting data from the on-prem db, I want to eliminate it and bring all the data to Fabric. But the existing reports are connected to the on-prem db, So I wanted to know if we can successfully, change the data source to fabric? So that the existing reports remain and now point to fabric lakehouse. Please let me know how. Thank you.

@Bijal Patel when you import the data to Fabric Lakehouse, you can either copy from on-prem and keep all the transformations in Power Query by just editing the source (I assume you have a connection to on-prem with a gateway. The alternative is to move the Power Query logic to Fabric to perform all transformations there, which would be recommended. Then you can use the reports towards the lakehouse, but still need to change the source in Power Query (just without applying tranformation steps). If I understand it correctly, it should be possible. If you create a new connection in Get Data in Power Query, you should be able to see the syntax in advanced editor and you can replace the connection in your existing queryies. For import you need to connect by selection the SQL endpoint when you see this option (if you don't want to use Direct Lake mode)
