We Just Finished Week 3 of ACT for Coaches and Here's What We Did...
This week in ACT for Coaches we talked about Experiential Avoidance and the many creative ways we, as human beings, try to make painful or intrusive thoughts and feelings go away. Most of the strategies we use arenāt inherently problematic or ābadā but can become so when we use them as avoidance mechanisms. We stay stuck and canāt move toward the life we want to live. šÆ Do you opt out of going places you enjoy, engaging in favorite activities, seeing friends or family? šÆ Do you distract yourself with TV, movies, books, social media, games? šÆ Do you try to think the thoughts and feelings away by fantasizing things were different, blaming others/God/the universe, repeating affirmations ad nauseam? šÆ Do you try to avoid the pain by overeating, drinking too much, using drugs? These are just a few of the strategies we develop to protect ourselves from experiencing unwanted intrusive thoughts. A big part of ACT for Coaches is learning how to get out of experiential avoidance and into a place where we are able to accept those thoughts and feelings as they arise and work to make them less effective at triggering avoidance strategies so we can be present in our lives and live life on our terms. The Winter Session of ACT for Coaches begins January 8 and the $200 early-bird discount is currently in effect. Have questions? DM me or write a comment below.
