What I Learned from Walking 24 Hours this weekend
As part of the 24theplanet series in Budapest, Hungary, I embarked on a 24-hour walk that taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, community, and the power of shared goals. It all began on Thursday around lunchtime when I packed my luggage and sat down for a final coffee with my wife before heading to Budapest. She asked, “Are you ready?” I replied, “As ready as you can be for something as crazy as walking for 24 hours.” Lesson 1: Embracing the unknown with respect and conviction is what allows you to take the first step. Fast forward to Friday afternoon, @Harijs Rozensteins (a fellow community member) and I made our way to the starting area, where we met the event organizer for lunch. We snapped a quick selfie, a little nervous about the challenges that lay ahead over the next 24 hours. During lunch, we connected with other participants, forming bonds that would carry us through the upcoming journey. Then came the countdown: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1—Go! About 15 of us set out to walk 24 hours together, raising funds for an NGO dedicated to re-greening degraded land in Africa. Lesson 2: Doing something alone can be daunting, but doing it with others makes it manageable. None of us knew exactly what it would take, but we all felt the strength in knowing we weren’t alone—we were in this together. Over the course of the walk, we sweated, talked, cried, sang, and got to know each other more deeply than we ever expected. Each of us faced rough moments where we needed mental and physical support from one another. Lesson 3: People are naturally inclined to help each other, often without needing to be asked. It’s crucial to be open about your struggles. I shared with one of the walkers that I was going through a tough phase and wasn’t feeling well. Immediately, he stepped into support mode—we took a detour to a water station, rehydrated with electrolytes, exchanged a few encouraging words, and he even made jokes to lift my spirits. It’s amazing what happens when we care for one another.
