I love the analogy comparing trying to understand LLM decisions to that of a teenager's decision. I presume the LLM developers must have some inkling of why the identical prompt can produce variable outputs? Must be some stochasticity built in to the computation of dot product from weights of all input tokens to all training set tokens?
👀 Look what I got early access to!
Will be doing a comparison to perplexity tomorrow!

Been leaning in to Perplexity a lot lately. It's access to literature and internet content is a huge strength over chatGPT. So, it will be exciting to see how the chatGPT+Internet search goes toe-to-toe with Perplexity!

@Joe ORourke Still looking forward to it. I'm collaborating with a UCLA Physics professor who has been using Perplexity pro to synthesize specific research topics, asking tons of follow up questions, and then using the results to have it write and publish blog-style reviews of the topics. Some of them take 20 minutes to from start to finish!
AI boosts creativity, innovation, and quality of life.
AI Has the Potential to Dramatically Increase Human Productivity, Creativity, and Quality of Life. Generative AI isn't just another technology. It's different because it can mimic human creativity and intelligence. Unlike past tech that replaced repetitive tasks, AI enhances our ability to think and create, opening paths we couldn’t imagine. One of the most promising ways AI can boost human potential is by augmenting creativity. Think about writing a novel or composing music. Traditional brainstorming methods limit you to the knowledge and ideas at hand. But AI can analyze vast amounts of data and present you with novel ideas. It helps you break creative blocks and inspires new directions. Essentially, AI scales your creativity. AI also democratizes innovation. In the past, innovation often required specialized knowledge or resources. Crowdsourcing tried to solve this but was hampered by problems in filtering and evaluating ideas. Generative AI changes that by helping to refine and synthesize inputs, making genuinely good ideas more likely to rise to the top. This means more people can contribute meaningfully to innovation. Another advantage is collaboration. AI bridges gaps between teams, allowing better communication and idea sharing. It helps interpret complex data and translates it into insights understandable by all, fostering a more inclusive innovation environment. This was something even the best crowdsourcing couldn’t achieve efficiently. AI promotes divergent thinking. Sometimes, experts get too attached to conventional wisdom. AI, however, can take a fresh look at a problem without biases, challenging existing notions and suggesting out-of-the-box solutions. It brings a new angle to problem-solving that purely human teams might overlook. Moreover, AI shines in ideating evaluations. Historically, vetting ideas in competitions or open calls has been cumbersome and inefficient. AI can sift through submissions, comparing them against successful patterns and historical data, enhancing the chances of identifying the true gems. This ensures that even in large pools of ideas, the best ones aren't lost.

Indeed! As an analogy, the invention of the telescope let us see farther than the naked eye, the invention of the microscope let us see smaller than the naked eye, and the invention of AI let's us see deeper and broader (in the infosphere) than the naked eye.

GM! I'm Aaron, Professor of Behavioral Neuroscience at the UCLA Department of Psychology. I direct the Comparative Cognition Lab there and spun up an art/science project studying pigeons making digital art. Where are you from? Born in Buffalo, but living in Los Angeles. What is your current level of AI knowledge? I use text-to-image generating tools like Midjourney and NightCafe regularly. I use chatGPT pro virtually every day, and am starting to use Perplexity more as well. What are you building? I'm using the image gen tools for art projects. I've also dabbled in using chatGPT to help write code to make generative art (I'm not a coder). But I mainly use chatGPT to aid in writing emails, papers, grant proposals for my research, and as a sounding board to brainstorm ideas. What is your #1 blocker? I just feel like my attention is bouncing all over the place. Tough to focus and make progress.
