Brainstorming Question

When working for content creators that are faceless, what are ways you help yourself brainstorm and visualize how to display what is being said? I often struggle with figuring out how to match what is being said then try to implement it. I'm curious, do you guys write your ideas down, do you just put something together until an idea spawn or does it just come off of your head from experience? (I hope my question makes sense)
