Hot take: Being angry at yourself is actually limiting your growth
It might sound nuts and you might want to yell at me right now for being out of my mind.
But if you want to hear what I have to say..
This came across me when I was working today.
I don't know who needs to hear this but
When I first started, I thought I had to be really angry at myself and go all out thinking "spend every waking hour and minute working or else you're a failure to your entire bloodline" something like that.
The irony is, I only got around 1-2 hours of work in and no progress whatsoever.
Now I'm able to work 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, sometimes even more hours of work every day just because I removed this 'toxic' mindset.
I love what I do, so I can do more in less time and move faster.
It's kind of crazy because you'd think being angry at yourself and punishing yourself would make you work more,
But all it does it associates pain with work.
Similar to schooling, you hate your teachers and your schoolwork because all teachers do is yell at you and never reward your hard work when you actually put in the work.
Why the hell would you want to hate your work and associate pain with work if you want to do more work?
The truth is you have to learn to forgive yourself and love what you do.
If you just force yourself to work on and on and on with no rest eventually you'll burn out.
It's like over-revving an engine (for all my car guys out there), if you over-rev an engine it'll blow, just like this.
Or if you train at the gym with no rest, you hit failure and you might injure yourself (similar to burnout)
Now I'm not saying like don't push yourself, but you have to forgive yourself because we're all humans and we make mistakes.
And also, instead of coming at work with a negative energy of "AAAAAAHHHH I'M NEVER DOING ENOUGH I NEED MORE MONEY"
Learn to love your work and your craft, like an artist making art.
Think about it, would you rather work with someone who is constantly worried about making more money or is worried about getting the best result for you?
The answer should be simple. Focus on doing your best and money will come as a result of your actions.
It's a toxic mindset and it's easy to fall into.
Being angry and driven has it's time and place, but if taken too far just like anything else there's the point of diminishing returns.
As always, let's win together 馃弳
P. S. share your thoughts in the comments, I might be wrong and some styles of working might suit different types of people but this is what I found worked best for me.
