Welcome to Week 2: Building Your 72-Hour Kit
I hope you guys spent last week getting your mindset in order. Remember, a strong mindset is the foundation of successful prepping. If you’re new to Skool, go back and start from Week 1’s curriculum so you don’t miss any of the steps.
This week, we’ll take the first practical step: assembling your 72-hour emergency kit. This kit will sustain you and your family for three days during an emergency, ensuring you’re ready for the unexpected.
Why a 72-Hour Kit?
A 72-hour kit is the cornerstone of emergency preparedness. It provides the essentials needed to survive the critical first days of a disaster, giving you time to adapt and make informed decisions.
Tasks for Week 2
1. Understand the Basics
A 72-hour kit typically includes:
- Water: At least 1 gallon per person per day.
- Food: Non-perishable items (e.g., protein bars, canned goods).
- Shelter: Emergency blankets, a tarp, or a small tent.
- First Aid: Basic first aid supplies.
- Lighting: Flashlights and extra batteries.
- Communication: A battery-powered or hand-crank radio.
- Personal Items: Medications, cash, ID copies.
2. Inventory What You Have
- Start by gathering items you already own that can go in your kit.
- Create a checklist of items you still need to acquire.
3. Build Your Kit
- Assemble your items in a sturdy, portable bag or backpack.
- Organize your kit into categories (e.g., food, water, tools) for easy access.
- Label the bag with your name and contact information.
4. Test Your Kit
- Spend one day using only the items in your kit to identify gaps or improvements.
- Share your experience and adjustments with the community.
Tips for Success
- Start Small: Focus on the basics first, then upgrade as needed.
- Budget-Friendly Options: Use dollar stores or thrift shops to find affordable items.
- Regular Updates: Check your kit every 6 months to replace expired items.
Reflection Questions
At the end of the week, consider:
- What was the most challenging part of building your kit?
- What items do you feel most confident about including?
- What adjustments will you make moving forward?
Write your answers in your journal to track your progress and insights.
Next Week: Prepare to dive into water storage and purification—a critical skill for long-term preparedness.
