California State Legislature Introduces SB 1047
Have you heard of SB 1047? SB 1047 is a bill that was introduced in the California State Legislature that aims to regulate advanced AI models. The bill is pretty dense (like 92 pages at least), but the TLDR is that developers would be required to, before they even begin training a model, comply with certain safety requirements. Third party audits starting January 2026 are being proposed, as well as granting the Attorney General access to documents upon request. As of 8/22/24, the bill has passed the first committee review, been read a third time and amended. This is starting to generate some interesting conversation around regulation of AI tech. Elon Musk said, "This is a tough call and will make some people upset, but, all things considered, I think California should probably pass the SB 1047 AI safety bill." Interesting coming from him since he, himself, posts AI-generated content that one may view as harmful. California policy tends to set new legislative agendas across the United States.
Curious to hear thoughts on if y'all think this bill will pass and, if so, what the impacts will be. Is this a bill people should advocate for or reject?
