How I lost my virginity to “Mother Ayahuasca”

Picture this:

It’s a warm evening in Los Angeles, 2015.

You find yourself in a dimly lit yoga studio with Daniel DiPiazza and 10 of his friends.

Your heart is racing, your palms are sweaty.

You watch a New York shaman prepare a mysterious brown brew. You feel a mix of excitement and fear wrap around like a thick blanket.

Suddenly, the shaman begins to call people one by one to get a cup of Mother Ayahuasca.

Your turn approaches.

The shaman’s eyes meet yours, and she gestures for you to come forward. Your mind starts racing with questions and doubts.

What will happen? Will it be as profound as they say?

Up until this moment, I’d never heard of Ayahuasca and had no idea what to expect.

The brew tastes like cough syrup, leaving a bitter aftertaste as I return to my spot trying to steady my racing mind.

But the real discomfort was in the uncertainty of what was about to unfold.

For 20 minutes, nothing happens. “Does this even work?” I wonder.

Suddenly, a drowsy feeling creeps from the back of my skull to the front of my brain. I felt like I needed to lie down.

Instantly, I see layers of multicolored 'energetic plates' flying off my chest in rapid succession!

As each one leaves my body, I have a feeling of gratitude wash over me as I realize exactly what they are.

Each plate represents a wall I’d built since I was 4 years old to protect myself from racial abuse and physical violence as being mixed-race (read non-white) in Manchester.

Over the years, I had inadvertently adopted a 'don't fuck with me' attitude that kept attackers, and even potential friends at bay.

As the walls shatter, I cry in gratitude thanking “Mother Ayahuasca” for stripping what is not serving me anymore.

Then, the journey intensifies…

I have a vision of my male friends and me doing the Wim Hoff Breathing Technique, harnessing what feels like the primordial masculine power of the universe.

In that moment, Mother Ayahuasca speaks to me:

“This is what’s available to men if you simple surrender.”

But I’d be lying If I say it's all sunshine and rainbows…

The experience pulls me into darkness.

I feel like Luke Skywalker when he is training to use the force with Yoda in the forest.

Luke starts walking in the forest with an eerie sense of doom to find Darth Vader there ready to kill him!

Except, there was no Darth Vader.

Just fear, negative voices, moaning, crying, painful feelings, and SUFFERING. But it isn’t my suffering, I feel the collective suffering of humanity.
