How To Overcome Imposter Syndrome
"After so many trainings and certifications, I still don't feel ready to apply for remote jobs because... " If this sounds like the voice in your head, walk with me...
Imposter syndrome is real and you are not alone, these are reasons why it happens and what you can do:
1. Fear of Inadequacy:
The more skills you acquire, the more you realize how much you don’t know. This awareness can lead to the fear that you’re still not “good enough” to take on a new role.
Try this: Remind yourself that learning is an ongoing process. You don’t need to know everything; you just need to be willing to grow. Focus on what you do know and how it can add value to the role.
2. Perfectionism:
Perfectionists often set unrealistically high standards for themselves. Even after earning multiple certifications, they might feel they need to achieve even more before they can consider themselves ready.
Overcome it: Embrace the concept of “good enough.” Perfection is an illusion. Recognize that your qualifications are sufficient and that no one knows everything.
3. Comparison to Others:
Seeing others in the field who seem more qualified or experienced can make you doubt your own abilities. This comparison can be paralyzing, leading to more training in an attempt to “catch up.”
Do this instead: Focus on your unique journey. Everyone’s path is different, and your experiences and skills bring something special to the table. Celebrate your achievements without comparing them to others.
4. Lack of Practical Experience:
You may feel that even with all your certifications, you lack the hands-on experience to perform well in a job. Volunteer, intern in order to receive real life feedback and grow your confidence.
5. External Validation:
The need for constant validation from others can lead you to keep chasing certifications instead of applying for jobs. You might feel that more qualifications will finally prove your worth.
Hear this: While feedback is valuable, the most important validation comes from within. You’ve reached a point where further training is less about growth and more about fear.
6. Anxiety About Remote Work Dynamics:
Remote work requires different skills than traditional roles, such as self-discipline and communication across time zones. This can make you feel unprepared despite your qualifications.
Overcome it: Equip yourself with specific skills needed for remote work, such as time management tools and digital communication techniques. Practice these in your daily life to build confidence.
Imposter syndrome can keep you in a cycle of endless training without ever feeling “ready.” But by recognizing these patterns and working to overcome them, you can break free and confidently step into the roles you deserve. You’re more capable than you think. The first step is to believe in yourself and take action.
