Layla, keep going...
Words that we need to hear from time to time
Earlier today, my twins had their first track meet.
My son ran the 100-meter and 200-meter races, and my daughter ran the 200-meter and 400-meter races.
All of the events went well except the 400.
From what I hear, 400 is the worst race because it is a full sprint around the track.
The problem is that 400 meters is not a short distance.
My daughter started off great; she ran the first 200 meters without a problem.
Then, it hit her.
She ran out of gas.
It could have been the distance, it could have been hot outside (75 degrees), or something else entirely.
Eventually, she started walking slowly, but tears started rolling down her face.
She was sad, angry, embarrassed, and frustrated that she could finish the race.
At this point, all of the other runners had finished the race.
She was on the track, alone,
It broke my heart.
I started to tear up.
Seeing my daughter out there alone while I could do almost nothing.
At that moment, I realized what I could do,
So I went down to the fence and said, "Layla, keep going."
She looked at me, tears still running down her face, and started running.
She ran the last 100 meters as fast as she could.
Everyone in the stands cheered her on as she finished.
She didn't quit, and that's what I loved most about it.
She could have walked off the track.
She could have just given up, but she just kept going.
Now she's swimming in the pool with no cares in the world.
It's funny how kids have such short memories.
So my message to you today is: KEEP GOING.
You might have slowed down.
You might have stopped.
You might be angry, tired, frustrated, and a little embarrassed.
But, KEEP GOING.
Finishing the race is more important than where you finished.
Especially if this is your first time.
