Mentorship Communication

I don't know a lot about mentorship and I threw away three chances for an internship. However, I was looking at the ICOR publication by Rishab and I was extremely confused to see a lot of the professors from BU. I thought since he lives in Oregon, how could he have commuted with people in Boston as in CT where I'm from, they made a big deal about me driving 90 minutes to get to the actual laboratory. So I was wondering if he would communicate on zoom or such platforms. Please let me know if any of you had to do anything similar. Thank you.
