One evening, I was out walking with a friend. It was around 9 p.m. In the middle of our conversation, my phone rang—it was my father. I told my friend, ‘I’m not going to answer; why is my dad calling me now?’
My friend said, ‘Answer it—maybe it’s urgent if he’s calling at an unusual time.’
On the other end, my father was in a panic, asking for help because my brother was choking on a piece of ham, which I could hear in the background.
As I tried to explain what to do, my brother’s condition was worsening, and my mother was unsuccessfully trying to save him.
Finally, I asked him to pass the phone to my mother so I could guide her through the Heimlich maneuver.
I explained it in a few seconds, and she performed it, saving my brother’s life.
In saving one life, four people played a role. I believe that, that night, each of us was part of a greater purpose.
How ironic it is that so many of us walk through life thinking we are unworthy and don’t deserve beautiful things or a good life, yet we play such a vital role in the lives of others.
When a stone is thrown into the Atlantic Ocean, the entire shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean changes.
If you didn’t exist, nothing would look as it does today.
It’s time to accept ourselves, with all our flaws, to understand that we are so important to our world and that our every action, influences an entire chain of causes and effects that we may not yet be able to see.
