Aleph Alpha, a German AI company, launched their language models Pharia-1-LLM-7B-control and Pharia-1-LLM-7B-control-aligned this week.
However, the results were quite disappointing. The models lack strong performance, only supporting translation in five languages.
Although they are open source, their use is strictly limited to private purposes. The license explicitly prohibits commercial, research, or administrative use.
This situation exemplifies why Germany may struggle to become a significant developer in the AI world, potentially remaining just a consumer.
