Known for thousands of years with many ancient tribes, it only emerged 'again' in modern times in the US in the 1960's.
Shaw-Metz's (2023: "Coming up for air: Breathwork practice for stress management in the healthcare setting") description of breathwork is on point:
"Breathing techniques, or breathwork, is a complementary modality that encourages controlled intentional breathing designed to interrupt the cycle of stress and promote the relaxation response. Breathwork is a safe, practical, and easily accessible modality for use in any healthcare setting, daily practice, or during a sudden onset of acute psychological distress."
While you can do breathwork at home, the effects are typically accelerated when doing it in a group setting. Simply look for 'breathwork session near me' in Google, and you'll probably find some providers. Ideally, there is at least one facilitator in addition to the person leading the session (typically groups of 10 or more).
Let us know: have you done breathwork before? What came up for you when you did it?
