Cheap and effective way to change the tone

Guitars have a capacitor on tone pot going to ground. Every tone pot will have one. The reason for this is to send unwanted frequencies to ground. Basically a high pass filter. Single coils have 250k pots and . 047 uf (microferad) capacitor . If you had 500k pots on single coils tone is really bright.

Humbuckers use 500k pots and. 022uf capacitor.

You know when you roll back the tone how it get almost muffled, here why. A pot is just a variable resistor. Add a capacitor it's a variable resister with a high pass filter. Sending unwanted high frequencies to ground. So, you can change pots to alter your tone, that's to much change and allot of work, or change the capacitor which is easy and fast.

Type of capacitor used also changes tone but not allot. Russian paper and oil work good but expensive. In guitar world cherry drops are most widely used.

There is no formula, or hard and fast rules since tone is different person to person and Guitars. Type of pickups, high/low output ect. High output pickups will be effected more than low output pickups. It's just a trial thing. I've done it with all of my guitars. Some I've dropped the humbucker tone capacitance to . 015 uf, others took it up to. 033 uf capacitance. Lower capacitance lots more highs through. High output Humbuckers would quickly get to high lowering capacitance. Once you find the capacitance you like, then when you roll off tone pot it will be smoother and not so dark and muffled.

Just a way you can alter your tone for a couple of bucks.
