Researchers analyzed over 10,000 maps of people’s brain activity. 🧠 Results showed that the overall shape of the brain was more important for explaining its function than the connectivity between specific areas.
Findings challenge the traditional focus within neuroscience on functional specialization — in other words, specific groups of neurons are specialized for particular tasks, like face recognition or memory.
The brain is best understood through its overall geometry and how neuronal activity resonates across the whole organ, the study found. 👨🏫
The findings raise the possibility of predicting the function of the brain directly from its shape.This is opening new avenues for exploring how the brain contributes to individual differences in behavior and risk for psychiatric and neurological diseases.
