Our Sin Dishonours God
‘A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.’ Proverbs 6:33
This verse emphasizes the lasting consequences of committing adultery. The "wound" speaks to the deep emotional, relational, and spiritual damage that results from such a sin. Unlike other wrongdoings, adultery leaves a permanent scar—both on the one who commits the act and on those affected by it. The word "dishonour" refers to the shame and loss of integrity that follows, marking the adulterer in the eyes of society and before God. While other sins may be forgiven and forgotten over time, the reproach of adultery often lingers, impacting reputations, relationships, and one’s inner sense of worth.
This warning about the enduring stain of adultery mirrors the broader biblical teaching on the consequences of sexual sin. In Hebrews 13:4, it says, "Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge." Adultery is a direct attack on the sanctity of marriage, and it invites judgment, not just in this life but before God. The reproach that “shall not be wiped away” is not just a societal label but reflects the deep moral and spiritual consequences that follow. The act of betrayal in adultery creates wounds that are difficult to heal, both for the individuals involved and for their families.
The verse also highlights the public nature of the consequences. In 2 Samuel 12:14, after David’s sin with Bathsheba, Nathan the prophet tells him, "Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme." David’s sin, though personal, had public and spiritual repercussions. It brought dishonor not only upon himself but also upon God’s name. In the same way, the reproach of adultery is a stain that goes beyond the individuals directly involved, affecting families, communities, and the witness of God’s people.
Practically, Proverbs 6:33 is a sobering reminder of the gravity of sin, particularly sexual sin. It warns us that while forgiveness is possible, the natural consequences of certain actions, like adultery, may persist for a lifetime. This calls for a deep respect for marriage and relationships, recognizing that sins of betrayal carry a heavy price. The verse challenges believers to walk in integrity, to avoid the temptations of sexual immorality, and to understand that the cost of sin is far greater than any temporary pleasure. It also serves as a reminder to guard our actions and choices carefully, knowing that certain sins leave lasting marks that cannot easily be erased.
