Story time! What's one of your fondest memories?
(Bonus points for photos!)
In 2022, I was doing my routine two-week volunteering to do outback trips for Kid's Cancer Care's Camp Kindle for the oldest teens. We teach life and leadership to equip the 16/17 year old to be future counselors at the camp and pay the servitude forward! We do all sorts of multi-day canoe trips, hiking trips to maximize discomfort and growth opportunities. But many of that is simply socially and characteristic growth.
One gal had a fairly heavy speech impediment and stutter that was mostly triggered during excitement of her own story-telling or nervousness. It wasn't for anybody's lack of patience, but she would psyche herself out and stifle her own story in embarrassment. DESPITE everybody supporting her to proceed.
I shared a few odd tactics I had learned from communications and negotiation books to focus attention to others when you speak and pay maximal attention to making other people feel comfortable. If you're too busy caring for others, you have less bandwidth the be insecure!
FAST-FORWARD to next year, those few diligent efforts mounted and when I returned for another two-week volunteering for 2023, that girl was already there now delegating to 3 different age groups and speaking PERFECTLY CLEAR with WILD charisma. She noticed me and gave me a running-jump hug and said, "I asked myself, 'What would Remmy do?' for a whole year and I HAVEN'T STUTTERED IN MONTHS!"
What little efforts we share compound in ways well beyond our control. You have no idea how much momentum somebody can gain off of your spark of an idea.
