I just accepted a job offer for a hybrid position, but I was looking for fully remote. I've been working remotely just fine for years, it's by far my preference.
Interview fatigue
Hey, folks! I'm curious to know how you deal with what I call "interview fatigue". When I start a new recruitment process, I'm basically constructing a whole vision of my next few years and presenting that to a new face. I'm also doing that over and over again for every new company that want to talk to me. Given I've been looking for work all year, I'm only now realising just how cognitively demanding this process is. Have you experienced this? How do you deal with it?

@Alejandro Eyquem Yeah, thanks for the preparation tips - I was lucky the last few times I had to look for jobs; I just showed up "as I was" and had a pretty good hit rate for job offers. Now even with loads of prep it feels like a gamble every time. And it's increasingly challenging to "take a break" when your household relies on you to keep the money coming in.

@Jeff Johnson That's a helpful reminder to be selective, thank you - I started off being very particular about what I pursued, but the more time passes, the more I feel I have to cast the net wider. Have you ever taken a job just out of desperation?
Technical Assessment - not what I expected
So I just took the Technical Assessment and the results are a revelation! Turns out my weaknesses are not what I thought they were: 1. "Architecture" - I thought I had a great handle on system design, turns out I don't know what I'm talking about so well! 2. "Software Lifecycle" - I believed I was totally comfortable with this domain, turns out it's a big blind spot 3. "Thinking Fullstack" - I'm very into the whole "full stack"/ "delivering end-to-end" idea, but looks like I have some work to do And my strengths: 1. "UI" - it's not my strongest interest, but I guess I put in the hours over the years? 2. "Algorithms" - total surprise! Never believed I knew my way around algos and data structures The only thing that makes sense here is I've always been passionate about Code Quality - phew! So if you haven't taken the Assessment, I highly recommend it - you might get a surprise too! BTW, anyone got any tips on how to get better at those first three?

@Corina Tudorache It's on the main SeniorDev site: Technical Assessment (theseniordev.com)
How personal should interviews get?
So, I just had a hiring process fall through at the final stage and the last interview was... weird. The questions were digging uncomfortably far back into my early life - I was asked about my origins, my childhood, my parents, growing up. By the time we got to my work history, I was *really* off balance and struggled to come with good responses. So now I'm wondering - why did they go there? If you were hiring an engineer, how much detail would you like to know about their past?

@Rakesh Kotian It was for a "Senior Fullstack Engineer" position - a primarily technical role, they had a very distinct career track for management.

@Bogdan Nedelcu Thank you - I think it's probably a good thing I dropped out of that process. It felt super weird, the way it was their deliberate line of questioning. Normally I think I have a good intuition for how "open" I should be in interview, which is very much in line with what you describe, so your response is reassuring.

Hi, everyone! I'm a Full Stack Software Engineer in the UK. I've been writing varying combinations of Typescript and Python for a few years (backend - Node, Django; frontend - React, Vue, Angular), but got started in C++ for video games and dabbled in other things on the side. I'm here because I still suffer from imposter syndrome: I want to figure out my weak points, grow and most of all, gain confidence.

@Rakesh Kotian Yep, learning programming by diving right in the deep end on a MSci! "Back in the day" - it was still C++98, went right from a maths degree with zero coding to a performance-oriented compiled language, "sink or swim". I wouldn't recommend it tbh πŸ˜… How about you - did you start with JS?
