Best way to tell is 2nd is rising so will always end higher than normal. The 3rd tone is a low tone so whenever the pitch deepens you know you’re dealing with either 3rd or sometimes 4th (typically the 4th tone is pretty easy to hear it’s much shorter and harsher) if it’s a deeper sound assume it’s 3rd tone

To pronounce the “x” sound in Mandarin it’s 2 things mouth position and practice, start by keeping your lips relaxed and slightly open. Keep your upper and lower teeth close together but not touching. Place the tip of your tongue just behind your lower front teeth, and flatten the middle part of your tongue so it’s close to the roof of your mouth. Now, try to make a hissing sound similar to “sh” but with more of a “s” quality, like a soft “sh.” Practice by saying words like “xi” (sounds like “shee”) and “xiao” (sounds like “sh-ow” with a soft “sh”). Keep your tongue flat and practice until it feels natural!
