Making the move
Hi everyone I’m looking to work & live in Thailand or Vietnam, Malaysia or Singapore. I’m a Civil Engineer/ Construction management professional who can work from home & on site. Would like to know if there are others in the community who have made to the move in similar profession to myself, any experiences good/bad & tips on gaining employment?

Hi Dave I'm in the same profession as you site engineer/manager in the UK and trying to work remotely. I've had enough of the construction sites & England in general and planning an exit strategy. In my opinion it's very difficult to find a job that you can work completely remote (Worldwide) Most companies expect you to be onsite at least 1/2 days a week depending on your job role because you need to engage with the site team/inspections. If your 100% working from home normally you need to be living within the UK but there are exceptions to the rule. Nowadays businesses are implementing mostly hybrid role. From my in-depth research the jobs that you could possibly work from anywhere are the following: -Construction Planner -CAD/BIM Technician -Civil Engineer Designer -Structural Steel detailer -Project Manager The above list could allow you to work for a company and live in Thailand but it depends on the companies attitude towards remote working, are you very skilled in that particular job eg 10+ years experience, have you worked at the company for many years so they know you can do the job and trust you, supply and demand-Is there a skill shortage and they can't fill that position. This would provide you with leverage to work fully remote. The other option would be to potentially work freelance/both to generate varies sources of income. Also, this doesn't get mentioned a lot is your pension, If you can work for a UK company and pay your taxes it would be better in the long run for your retirement. Unfortunately my job is location dependent as a site engineer as you know. I could possibly try to transition into one of these roles mentioned above. But this would require spending ex amount of years learning that type of trade in the UK. If that's the case I might as well learn a more remote friendly role such as IT/programming, Digital Marketing etc as I think you can hit the ground running in a year with the right commitment. I hope the above info helps and goodluck. I think if you can work fully remote, the work life balance would be great living in a 3rd world country eg Latin America/Asia. But most important is to earn a Western salary and have a great life.

Hi Dave apologies for the late reply, I know of construction recruitment agencies in the UK eg Anderselite, fawkes and reece etc but I haven't tried to work remotely. I would google search, speak with recruiters and contact companies directly. You have nothing to lose and plenty to gain, hope you get some luck, cheers
Career Change into Web Development
Hi All I was wondering if anyone can provide me with some valuable advice. Over the years I have been thinking about having a career change into IT in-particular Web development, I enjoy building a product/creative, my own boss, not dealing with multiple people and being a digital nomad. I'm 37 years old and my current job is a site engineer (Civil) so I am very location independent in the UK. It's getting to the stage where I need to make a change in the next 2/3 years as I can't see myself continuing to work in construction for the next 25 years. A number of years ago after visiting Thailand and Mexico there were many nomads working from their laptops and I wanted that type of lifestyle but financial it wasn't possible at the time. Fast forward a few years I'm now in the position to change and I've learnt HTML, CSS on/off and I didn't pursue studying further frameworks due to lack motivation because I believe- - The market has become oversaturated for entry level positions due to people self learning and bootcamps - Difficult to compete against people from the 3rd world countries who are willing to work for much less. You only have to go on Upwork to see for yourself. - Platforms where you can build websites very easily eg Wix's - The latest problems is the recession, large tech layoffs and ChatGPT has contributed to the overall future of working in web development. My main question is do you think web development is still worth pursing? Or Look at other type of tech/non jobs where you can work anywhere in the world? I don't want to put all my valuable time and resources to finally get there, I couldn't get a job/clients or the pay is really low and its just not worth it. My plan was to focus on a niche market that is construction as its my background, many small to medium sub contractors need websites and would have a sizeable budget. But my feeling is though I have missed the boat and if I did it 6/7 years ago I would be now living a independent life in Mexico.

@Faddy F Thanks for taking your time in replying. It's a unconventional answer but I get what you are trying to say. You need passion, interest and overall enjoyment or you will never make it.
